Admission and Application Process for the RN-BS Program
The requirements for admission to the RN-BS Program are:
- current license to practice professional nursing in the USA.
- complete prerequisites prior to the first day of class (Multicultural Women's Studies - 3 hours must be completed prior to graduation).
Although all prerequisites are strongly encouraged to be completed prior to the start of the nursing program, RN BS students may progress on a part time basis while completing a limited number of Texas Core Curriculum prerequisites. This option does not apply to RN's with a prior bachelor's degree and RN's who are "Core Complete" at a College or University in the State of Texas. Please confer with your advisor should you have questions as to whether this is applicable to you.
Prerequisite courses which may be taken with the first level of nursing courses (Nursing 3643, Nursing 3612, Nursing 3614) include Visual or Performing Arts, Math 1013 - Quantitative Approach to Introductory Mathematics, Sophomore Literature or Philosophy, and an elective. However all prerequisites must be completed to progress beyond Nursing 3643, Nursing 3612, and Nursing 3614.
- admission to the University. A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale on all transferable course work is required. The Undergraduate Application to Texas Woman's University is completed online at Apply Texas. The required undergraduate university application fee is $30 ($50 for international students). The application will not be processed without receipt of the fee. When applying for the RN-BS Program specify your major as Nursing RN to BS (code 55221), and the semester and year you expect to enter.

complete and mail the complete and mail the Application for Admission to Upper Division Nursing for the College of Nursing - RN BS for the semester which you are seeking admission. There is no application fee to the College of Nursing for registered nurses. The College of Nursing mailing addresses are located on the bottom of the application.

Deadlines
The Undergraduate Application for admission to the University (Apply Texas) and all official transcripts should be submitted as far in advance as possible. The following are suggested deadlines:
- April 1 for the Fall Semester
- August 1 for the Spring Semester
- February 1 for the Summer Semester
Please note: The above dates are suggested deadlines. Applications are processed in the order received. You are encouraged to apply early so you receive an official evaluation of course work and an acceptance to the University.
Prerequisite Courses for the RN BS
To be eligible for admission to the RN BS Program, the registered nurse must complete the required prerequisites. Most of the prerequisites must be completed prior to the first class day. Core Curriculum Transfer Policy
The TWU Academic Affairs, Core Curriculum web site provides a listing of courses approved for Core Curriculum. In accordance with the Texas Education Code, students who have satisfactorily completed a 42 hour core curriculum at an institution of higher learning in Texas are not required to complete the core curriculum at TWU.
Core Competencies
According to the TWU General Catalog 2009 – 2011 (page 73), each student must pass a 1) computer science course (CSCI 1403 or CSCI 2433) or a competency examination in computer literacy, and 2) a speech course (SPCH 1013, BUS 3513, or DRAM 3493) or document successful completion of two or more evaluated oral presentations. Students are encouraged to complete these requirements prior to enrolling in the nursing program. Registered Nurses who are Core Complete in the State of Texas or have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University
Registered nurses who have a baccalaureate degree or have completed a 42 hour core curriculum at an institution of higher learning in Texas (community college or state supported university) are not required to complete the core curriculum at TWU or the core competencies (speech and computer). Courses that have been previously successfully completed do not have to be repeated. The following prerequisites are required:

Credit Awarded
Twenty-eight semester hours of credit will be awarded to those individuals who are licensed to practice professional nursing in the USA as a registered nurse and who have met the criteria for admission to the College of Nursing. Credit is awarded for Nurs 3813 Pharmacology, Nurs 3025 Women’s Health and Family Role Competencies, Nurs 3035 Adult Health Competencies I, Nurs 4615 Mental Health Competencies, Nurs 4055 Child Health Competencies, and Nurs 4045 Adult Health Competencies II.

Advanced Placement – Nursing Courses Which May Be Challenged [pdf]
All students in the RN to BS, RN to MS and Post Baccalaureate RN MS Program are eligible to challenge the undergraduate nursing courses. Advanced placement through the challenge examination process offers the registered nurse the opportunity to challenge courses for which the student has gained knowledge through continuing education, life experiences, or academic course work.
The following courses may be challenged by students who are officially enrolled in the course and complete the challenge exam during the first week of the semester.
