•Interdisciplinary Clinical Collaboration Project (ICCP)– Texas Woman’s University (Houston & Denton), Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Tech Health Science Center, and University of Houston has collaborated to study nurse & physician communication.
Abstract
Communication problems have been identified as one of the leading cause of medical errors (Maxwell, 2007). Interdisciplinary education enables the nursing graduate to enter the workplace with competencies in establishing collegial relationships with physicains; be able to recognize role expections and unique disciplinary practice spheres; be prepared for open communication; and have an optimized level of respect and trust that can lead to better patient care outcomes (AACN, 2007). The goal of this project was to develop a new instructional model using high fidelity simulators that would strategically incorporate communication competencies.
Introduction
The ICCP project was an integrated effort between two colleges of nursing and a medical school, designed to develop an interdisciplinary collaborative clinical education pilot in a "patient safe", risk free environment Fall 2007. The pilot involved a nursing and a medical student team that provided care to a high acuity patient (simulator) via a standardized scenario.
Purpose
- BCM use stimulation to access medical student exit competencies
- TWU focus on communication and collaboration competencies
Student Objectives
- Correct and accurate transfer of vital patient information.
- Effective team collaboration that produces positive patient care outcomes.
- Behaviors that aid and encourage respect, trust and credibility among team members.

Methods/Instruments
- Observation
- Debriefing Survey
- Evaluation tools:
- Interpersonal Communication
- Patient Care Skills
- SBAR Rubric
- Debriefing
- Student perceptions
Project Results
- Identified 3 core competencies for clinical collaborative practice
- Developed collaborative project team model
- Identified areas for future research
Pilot
- Comfortable to communicate. The doctor asked for my input.
- Great experience, I made mistakes, but this was a valuable learning process. My nurse was great!
Working together should be a part of our programs!
Student Outcomes
Utilized key components of information transfer model to formulate collaborative practice.
Demonstrated collaboration to arrive at a common mental model of the patient and/or family's priorities and needs and actions needed to achieve positive patient outcomes.
Demonstrated a positive communication style/pattern that promotes trust, repsect, and safety to establish interdisciplinary professional credibility.
•Undergraduate Nurse Clinical Competency Project - Texas Woman’s University (Houston) and the Methodist Hospital (Texas Medical Center) have developed a project to evaluate new graduate competencies and job readiness in the simulation laboratory. The results of the research will be infused into the undergraduate program.
•College of Nursing projects
Faculty Informatics Competencies – establish existing baseline competencies to identify faculty development needs.
Undergraduate Informatics Competencies-establish existing baseline competencies to identify undergraduate curriculum needs.
PDA usage –establish faculty and student competencies, hardware & software compatibilities, and IT infrastructure to suggest PDA use in the nursing program.
