Education Center for Clinical Innovations & Advanced Technologies

Nursing Students in Clinical EnvironmentThe Memorial Hermann  Healthcare System (MH) and Texas Woman’s University Education Center for Clinical Innovations and Advanced Technologies is a program funded by  the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System to assist faculty with integrating technologies (simulation, clinical technology, & informatics) seamlessly into nursing education.

Mission of the Center

  • Work with faculty in preparing graduates as they acquire the informatics competencies necessary for entry level, advanced practice, and research roles.
  • Enhance the learning of clinical skills and competencies by utilizing advanced clinical & educational technologies.
The Center works within the College of Nursing to form collaborative opportunities with service providers and vendors to implement current and emerging technologies in the laboratories at all 3 TWU locations.

Clinical Laboratory Technologies

The Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (MH) and Texas Woman’s University Education Center for Clinical Innovations and Advanced Technologies is one of the few sites in the country to have a Remote Monitoring system and Control Room (CORe).

Nursing Students in Computer LabThis state of the art system includes hardware and software that allows “nurses” to view and communicate with students providing care in the simulation laboratory. The system also includes eCareManager software which contains an electronic documentation flow sheet, medication administration record, nursing care plan, and lab/radiology results viewing. eCareManager has an integrated point-of-care decision support and evidence-based practice module via The Source, an internet resource with built-in eAlertsto assist in providing high quality care. The impetus for this program came from the revolutionary eICU concept developed by VISICU and Johns Hopkins University.

Research Projects

  • Interdisciplinary Clinical Collaboration Project (ICCP): TWU (Houston), Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Tech Health Science Center, the University of Houston, and Midwestern State University have developed a project to evaluate new graduate competencies and job readiness in the stimulation laboratory. The results of the research will be integrated into the undergraduate program.
  • Undergraduate Nurse Clinical Competency Project: TWU (Houston) hospitals in the Texas Medical Center have developed a project to evaluate new graduate competencies and job readiness in the simulation laboratory. The results of the research will be integrated into the undergraduate program.
  • Technology Use Project: The purpose of this project is to discover the ways students currently use technology to learn, communicate, and network. This is a multi-institution collaborative project with Baylor College of Medicine and the UTHSC School of Health Information Sciences.

College of Nursing Projects

  • Faculty Informatics Competencies: Establish existing baseline competencies to identify faculty development needs.
  • Undergraduate Informatics Competencies: Establish existing baseline competencies to identify undergraduate curriculum needs.
  • PDA Usage: Establish faculty and student competencies, hardware & software compatibilities, and IT infrastructure to suggest PDA use in the nursing program.
