The College of Nursing in Denton is located on the beautiful campus of Texas Woman’s University and offers a baccalaureate degree program with a major in nursing, a master’s degree program with a major in nursing and a PhD program with a major in nursing.  Please browse our Web site for more detailed information on the BS program, the MS program, and the PhD program.

For those interested in the baccalaureate program, opportunity is provided for admission and program completion for individuals with a variety of educational backgrounds.  There are specific program plans for the following groups:

  1. basic students (those entering nursing without prior nursing education)
  2. transfer students from another baccalaureate nursing program
  3. non-nurses with a baccalaureate degree in another field, and
  4. registered nurses who have a diploma or associate degree.

Freshman and sophomore courses are offered on the Denton campus.  The junior and senior courses are available at the University’s clinical centers in Dallas and Houston.  For RNs who are interested in the RN-BS program, courses are available in Denton through the virtual e-learning campus.

The Master of Science degree is offered at the Denton campus.  The master’s degree program prepares registered nurses for leadership roles in the delivery of health care and the promotion of health. The focus of study for the master’s degree program in Denton is family nurse practitioner or nurse educator.  TWU now has a 100% online nurse educator program which allows a student to complete the program in 12 months of full time coursework.  An accelerated program (RN-MS) is also offered for highly motivated and experienced associate degree or diploma prepared RNs whose career goals would be enhanced through graduate study.  At the Denton campus, registered nurses who have a master’s degree in nursing may seek admission to a post-master’s certification program in one of two areas:  nurse practitioner or nurse educator.

The PhD degree program is designed for registered nurses who have developed specialized expertise in health care with the primary goal to develop leaders and scholars who will make a significant contribution to the nursing profession.  Students are encouraged to apply for a GAANN fellowship to assist them in meeting their financial needs during their program of study (please see further information under the PhD web page)."  Faculty and students actively engage in many research projects focused on evidence-based clinical care in a variety of settings.   Among the current research foci on the Denton campus are:

  1. teen pregnancy
  2. neonatal mortality
  3. nursing roles in childbirth/labor support
  4. lactation issues
  5. relationships among teen mothers, their babies, and grandmothers
  6. HIV infected mothers and their children and
  7. pain management in osteoporosis and arthritis.

The nursing faculty have embraced distance education as a way to better serve students.  All of the non-clinical nursing courses in Denton are offered at least 51% online, thus enabling students who do not live in Denton or the surrounding areas to enroll in one of our nursing programs.  The College of Nursing in Denton is housed in a state of the art building with sophisticated technology in every classroom.
