Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs) are leaders in the health care delivery system who manage at the point of care, and assume an advanced generalist's clincial practice role. CNLs function within a microsystem and assume responsibility for healthcare outcomes for a specific group of clients through assimilation and application of research-based information to design, implement, and evaluate plans of care. CNLs are providers and managers of care and facilitate lateral integration of clinical services.

The CNL role encompasses the following broad areas:

  • Clinician
  • Outcomes
  • Manager
  • Client Advocate
  • Educator
  • Information Manager
  • Systems Analyst / Risk Anticipator
  • Team Manager

Core Requirements

A total of 39 credit hours are required for completion of the clinical nurse leader track. The following courses must be completed by all clinical nurse leader students:
