Texas Woman’s University selects new Graduate School dean
Following a national search, Texas Woman’s University today announced Carolyn Kapinus, Ph.D., will serve as dean of its Graduate School. Kapinus, interim associate vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., will join TWU on Aug. 1.
“About one-third of our students in Denton, Dallas and Houston are graduate students, so Dr. Kapinus’ leadership, scholarship and experience will be incredibly valuable as we continue to expand student enrollment and heighten awareness of our quality portfolio of graduate programs,” said Jennifer Martin, interim provost and vice president of academic affairs.
Martin noted that TWU has 60 master’s and 23 doctoral programs, with particular national recognition in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, library science and nutrition. In addition, Texas Woman’s holds the Carnegie Classification of Doctoral/Research Universities, and last year awarded 213 doctoral and 1,380 master’s degrees.
“Dr. Kapinus’ academic credentials are strong and align well with our strategic direction,” Martin added. “In addition to her administrative leadership, she has been recognized for teaching excellence as a sociology professor. She also initiated graduate student success workshops that included writing theses/dissertations, crafting resumes, pursuing grants and working with publications panels. That kind of focus on preparing students for success is particularly important to us at TWU.”
Martin said that TWU plans to further enhance opportunities for graduate student research alongside faculty, noting that Kapinus oversaw Ball State’s Office of Sponsored projects Administration, which assisted faculty and staff in securing nearly $26 million in external funding this past fiscal year.
“I am thrilled to join the TWU community,” Kapinus said. “The history and mission of Texas Woman’s University deeply resonates with my values. I am looking forward to working with Chancellor Feyten, as well as TWU leadership, faculty, staff and students to advance graduate education.”
Kapinus earned her Ph.D. and master’s degree in sociology from Penn State and Texas Tech University, respectively, with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology (cum laude) from Centenary College of Louisiana.
