Fashion students “Go Red” for annual heart health event

The fashion lab at Texas Woman’s University is a flurry of activity as students prepare for the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women Fashion Show and Luncheon, scheduled Friday, Feb. 10.
The event pits TWU fashion students against their University of North Texas counterparts in a friendly rivalry. The luncheon, which raises funds for heart research and educational programs, will take place at the UNT Gateway Center on that university’s Denton campus.
Sheri Dragoo, Ph.D., professor of fashion and textiles at TWU, produces and provides commentary for the show, now in its 12th year. Approximately 55 to 65 pieces — ranging from dresses to menswear to children’s wear to accessories — are created for the show each year.
Students are given the event’s theme around the middle of the fall semester. Dragoo is excited about this year’s theme, “The Queen of Hearts.”
“This year’s theme offered the students an opportunity to choose serious or fun and full of frivolity,” she said. “Whether students channeled Alice in Wonderland’s version or the Queen in the royal palace, the red garments offer the audience great entertainment while viewing the students’ hard work and design skills … it is a win for all involved!”
The event is an opportunity for students to experience what an industry runway fashion show is like, complete with models, quick changes and audience reaction. A panel of judges will award prizes for the fashions, and the audience also will vote for their favorites.
The luncheon also is an opportunity to increase awareness of heart disease and stroke, the country’s number one killer of women. The cause behind the Go Red event serves as an inspiration for the fashion students, according to Dragoo.
“That’s our goal,” she said. “We want them, when they become designers, to think of ways to give back to the community.”
