Texas Woman’s alumnus receives prestigious National Education Association award
Michael Franklin, M.A., TWU Department of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies alumnus
Michael Franklin, a graduate of the TWU Department of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies master of arts program, has been named the winner of this year’s National Education Association’s Applegate-Dorros Peace and International Understanding Award. The association recognizes one educator annually for outstanding contributions to world peace and exceptional mentorship of young students.
Franklin is receiving the award in recognition of his work with The Alabama Honduras Medical and Educational Network, which partners with Honduran communities to challenge structural poverty through relief and developmental efforts. Franklin received his master’s degree in women’s studies from TWU in 2012.
“According to his professors, Michael showed outstanding leadership skills and a passion for serving others through education while pursuing his master's degree in our program. We are very proud of his achievements,” said Mark Kessler, Ph.D., interim chair of the TWU Department of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies.
In 2015, Franklin authored the book Applying Ecofeminist Theory to Christian Mission Work in Honduras: Building Theoretical Bridges for Change. He also served as a keynote speaker for the Tennessee Education Association’s annual Committees and Commission Meeting 2015-2016 on the Status of Women in Education. His presentation included information about women as agents of change in communities, the importance of women’s leadership in education, and establishing gender equity within schools. He currently works as a Spanish teacher at Franklin County High School and serves as the vice president of the Franklin County Education Association in Winchester, Tennessee.
Franklin will accept the award July 1, 2017 at the NEA Representative Assembly in Boston, Massachusetts.
“This is truly an honor, and a reflection of the opportunities and insights an education from TWU can provide,” Franklin said.
