Pick a focus for your topic

It is very difficult to write on a broad topic like "safety" or "art" or "nursing." There is simply too much information on topics this broad. You may have to choose a narrower aspect of a topic to explore.  For example, instead of "safety" your topic might be "Are infants safer when they travel in infant car seats?" or  "Do gun safety locks really violate the 2nd Amendment?"

List keywords that describe your topic

Think about the keywords, significant terms, and concepts that describe your topic. These terms will become the key for searching online catalogs, databases, and the internet for information on your topic.

Example: Does excessive cell phone use cause cancer?

Possible keywords: cell phones, cellular telephones, cancer, health, neoplasms, oncology.
