Basketball earns hard win against HSU
Amanda Smith, Sports Editor

Sophomore guard Keshia Bolds scored on a 12-foot jumper with just eight seconds left in regulation to give the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers a hard-fought 71-70 win over the Henderson State University Lady Reddies on Tuesday night in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Bolds’ decisive basket helped the Pioneers overcome several critical mistakes in the game’s waning moments. TWU appeared to have the contest well in hand with 1:45 left to play after two free throws from junior post Renee Renz gave the Pioneers a 69-64 lead. The Pioneers, however, committed turnovers on their next three possessions. HSU capitalized on the TWU miscues with three consecutive layups to pull in front 70-69 with just 22 seconds left.

After a TWU timeout, Bolds delivered for the Pioneers by dribbling through the Lady Reddies pressure man-to-man defense to hit what proved to be the game-winning bucket.

HSU had two chances to win the game in the final seconds. First, Christina Hall, the Lady Reddies freshman guard, drove into the TWU lane and was fouled in the act of shooting by the Pioneers’ Jessica Durr. Hall could not convert from the free throw line as she missed both foul shot opportunities. Her second shot, however, was rebounded by HSU freshman guard Jazmine Ellis. As the horn sounded to end the game, Ellis shot a fadeaway jumper that fell just short, allowing the Pioneers to walk off the court with their first road win of the season.

TWU head coach Beth Jillson praised Bolds for making the winning basket.

“I told Keshia in the timeout to stay aggressive. They were pressuring us all over the court, and I wanted us to look to attack them. Keshia made a heck of play to not only get free, but also knock down the shot,” she said.

The Pioneers used a blistering shooting effort from the field (58.3% from two-point range, 42.9% from three-point range) in the first half to take a ten-point lead, 39-29, into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Reddies turned the tables on TWU in the second half by shooting a smoldering 63% from the field to claw their way back into the game.

Senior forward Savannah Thompson scored a game-high 20 points for the Pioneers (2-3). Renz (13 points) and Durr (12 points) also finished in double figures for TWU.

Guards Chanlee Bottoms and Katie Williams scored 16 points apiece for the Lady Reddies (2-4) in the loss. HSU senior guard Candy Hall led all players in the game with nine rebounds.

TWU will play two more road games this week, visiting Cameron University on Thursday, December 6, and traveling to Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, December 8.
