All positions are paid salary – except the Advertising Salesperson, who gets a combination of wage and commission.

While these positions pay $5.85 per hour, working for The Lasso is an excellent way to build the type of real world, professional experience that will strengthen a TWU graduate’s resume, as well as the qualified candidate’s working knowledge of the publishing industry. We have also instituted technology workshop for our staff (Photoshop, InDesign, and Web Building) for continued training. Work schedules are flexible for most positions. Positions are 5 - 20 hours/week, depending on the position.

EDITORIAL 

Editor-in-Chief: 20 hours per week. This executive officer is responsible for the news and editorial content of The Lasso, as well as its overall planning, design and production. The editor-in-chief should hire and delegate authority so that all jobs are done efficiently by qualified staff. This person holds weekly editorial staff meetings and arranges regular office hours with the staff. The editor-in-chief, with help from the adviser, holds a workshop before the start of each semester to make sure that the staff receives the knowledge and information necessary to perform their tasks. The editor-in-chief works with the advertising staff, business manager and adviser to make sure the budget is met. Along with The Lasso’s entire advertising staff, the editor-in-chief must attend a workshop about PowerBuy (a college advertising consortium) at the University of Texas at Arlington. This workshop is held before the start of each academic year. The editor-in-chief must work closely with the adviser in all aspects of The Lasso. The editor-in-chief should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least two pages per week (including the front page). Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available. This position is not hired by The Lasso office.

Managing Editor: 15 hours per week. The managing editor is “second in command” at The Lasso and should work closely with the editor-in-chief and adviser to produce the finest newspaper possible. This person should keep regular office hours. The managing editor should help the editor-in-chief find and assign stories to reporters and other editors. The managing editor should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available. BEGIN IMMEDIATELY.

News Editor: 10 hours per week. Page editors should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. These people will do reporting, including interviewing members of the TWU community and covering TWU events. And, they will learn to write in The Associated Press and The Lasso style. They will take photographs when necessary. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available. BEGIN IN JANUARY.

Features Editor: 10 hours per week. Page editors should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. These people will do reporting, including interviewing members of the TWU community and covering TWU events. And, they will learn to write in The Associated Press and The Lasso style. They will take photographs when necessary. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available. BEGIN IN JANUARY.

Opinion Editor: 10 hours per week. Page editors should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. These people will do reporting, including interviewing members of the TWU community and covering TWU events. And, they will learn to write in The Associated Press and The Lasso style. They will take photographs when necessary. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available.

Sports Editor: 10 hours per week. Page editors should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. These people will do reporting, including interviewing members of the TWU community and covering TWU events. And, they will learn to write in The Associated Press and The Lasso style. They will take photographs when necessary. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available. BEGIN IN JANUARY.

Entertainment Editor: 10 hours per week. Page editors should write at least two articles weekly and should design at least one page per week. These people will do reporting, including interviewing members of the TWU community and covering TWU events. And, they will learn to write in The Associated Press and The Lasso style. They will take photographs when necessary. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available.

Online Editor: 5 hours per week. The online editor must have knowledge/background in Web design. Knowledge of GoLive would be helpful. This person works on Thursdays and takes the articles from The Lasso and puts them into the Web version of the newspaper. BEGIN IN JANUARY.

Copy Editor: 5 hours per week. The copy editor reads all text and corrects it for grammar and style (The AP, The Lasso, and standard newspaper styles – training is available). This person must have strong English skills.

Staff Writer, including Dallas and Houston correspondents: 5 hours a week. Reporters are assigned stories by the editor-in-chief or the managing editor. They interview, report on events, and write (The Associated Press, The Lasso and standard newspaper styles – training is available) two articles weekly. Also, the Houston and Dallas correspondents need to find stories about their campuses and inform the editor-in-chief about what they plan to cover. BEGIN IMMEDIATELY.

                                   

ADVERTISING 

Business Manager: 20 hours per week. The business manager MUST be a business major (preferably a junior, senior or graduate student). This person is responsible for The Lasso’s marketing and advertising. The business manager oversees the advertising/marketing staff and holds weekly meetings with them. Along with The Lasso’s entire advertising staff, the advertising sales manager must attend workshops about PowerBuy (a college advertising consortium) at the University of Texas at Arlington. One workshop is held before the start of each academic year; the other, which will be held in September, will focus on the selling of PowerBuy ads. Also, the business manager, along with the editor-in-chief and adviser, devises and implements a marketing plan. The business manager makes sure all bills are sent and paid.

Advertising Sales Manager: 10 hours per week. The advertising sales manager must work to increase sales each week. That requires making “cold calls” (by telephone, by e-mail, or in person) to businesses in Denton, Dallas and Houston. Also the advertising sales manager returns all telephone messages about sales and fills out contracts/insertion orders. Along with The Lasso’s entire advertising staff, the advertising sales manager must attend workshops about PowerBuy (a college advertising consortium) at the University of Texas at Arlington. One workshop is held before the start of each academic year; the other, which will be held in September, will focus on the selling of PowerBuy ads. The advertising sales manager must attend weekly meetings lead by the business manager, and must work closely with the business manager, advertising designer, editor-in-chief and adviser to make sure that sales meet the needs of The Lasso’s marketing plan. The Advertising Salesperson is paid a combination of wage and commission.

Advertising Designer: 10 hours per week. The advertising designer “builds ads” (creates them) and puts advertisements (both the ones that she builds and the ones that are sent via e-mail) on the pages. This person must make sure all advertisements are in the correct form (grayscale or CMYK, 300 resolution, TIFF, etc.) before they are placed on the pages. Along with The Lasso’s entire advertising staff, the advertising designer must attend a workshop about PowerBuy (a college advertising consortium) at the University of Texas at Arlington. This workshop is held before the start of each academic year. This person must attend weekly meetings lead by the business manager, and must work closely with the business manager, advertising sales manager, editor-in-chief and adviser to make sure the advertisements meet the needs of The Lasso’s marketing plan. Knowledge of InDesign (publishing software) is useful, but not required. Training is available.

CIRCULATION 

Circulation Manager: 5 hours per week. The circulation manager delivers all the newspapers on the Denton campus and sends two bundles each to the Houston, Parkland and Presbyterian campuses. This job must be done each Thursday. The circulation manager must be able to push a cart (full of newspapers) across the Denton campus.
