The Lasso is the student run newspaper of Texas Woman’s University. Students founded it in 1914 as an experiment in campus communications. The first issue was distributed Saturday, November 7, 1914. The Department of Journalism took responsibility for the student newspaper when the department began operations in 1925. The Lasso was a daily publication for decades, until it became a weekly paper in the 1980s. The Lasso began online editions in 2003. The Lasso has been a continuous operation since 1914, due to support from the University, as well as the students, faculty, and staff. Since January 2006, the academic home of The Lasso has been the Department of English, Speech, and Foreign Language. The Lasso is supported financially through student fees and ad sales.
The Lasso is a recognized student activity with an academic base in the Department of English, Speech, and Foreign Language. It is expected to inform students, faculty, staff, and other interested parties of University issues and events. The Lasso provides a forum for communication. It is also a training ground for future members of the journalism profession.
The Lasso is a weekly student-run newspaper, written by students, produced by students, and printed at DFW printing. The Lasso is a student publication of the Texas Woman's University. Editors develop their own editorial and news policies.
