Letter from the Editor - Happy Holidays!

TWU students, faculty, and staff,

Well, another semester is almost over—all we have to do is make it through finals next week (which is no small task). I hope everyone had a successful fall and is going to have a relaxing winter break. For me, this has been one of the tougher semesters. Not only was I taking several challenging classes, but also things at The Lasso have been a little crazy. So many of us on staff were new this semester—it has certainly been a learning experience for all. Staff members came and went throughout the past few months, making it difficult to settle into a routine. For this reason, The Lasso is currently hiring for a number of positions (please see the ad on page three). I will be the first to admit that this has been a stressful semester; however, it has also been very professionally fulfilling. Thankfully, those who stuck it out this fall have been fantastic, and I need to give a huge “thank you” to all of them.

Although there have been a few kinks here and there, overall I am pleased with the progress that The Lasso has made thus far. Those on staff are hard working and enthusiastic, and each week we see an improved product. I am dedicated to seeing continued progress throughout the spring, both in our printed papers and online issues. In order to do this, though, we need your help! I have been thrilled by the amount of constructive feedback we have received and I hope this will become a regular occurrence. After all, I do not always know what readers want if they do not tell me. By the way, I know that a lot of you have missed the sudoku – we ran into a technical kink and I am doing my best to get it up and running for our upcoming issues.

I will keep this letter short and sweet, since so many of us on campus have more studying and preparation to do before we can enjoy the rest of the month. Good luck on finals and have a wonderful holiday season. Be sure to tune back in with us in January, we have a lot of exciting ideas up our sleeves!

Best,

Allison Sheardy

Editor-in-Chief

Letter from the Editor

Allison Sheardy
Editor-in-Chief

To all the TWU Faculty, Staff, and Students:

Ahhh, another school year. Time to sharpen those pencils – and those minds. As the new Editor-in-Chief of Texas Woman’s University’s student run publication The Lasso, I hope to do just that. Although I certainly cannot help you out with a Calculus problem or explain the fundamentals of organic chemistry to you, I can help you learn about your school and your community. In fact, that is exactly why The Lasso staff and I are here.

The Lasso is going to be undergoing a lot of change this semester and throughout the rest of the year. Although some aspects will be familiar to our readers, such as the recipe section and the Sudoku games, others will be all new. Be sure to look out for new columns and articles. Also, we are pleased to announce that The Lasso will be eight pages instead of six for the remainder of the year.

As students, each year we start school full of expectations about what we will learn and who we will become. I know I always am, especially this year. I am brimming with expectations of my classes, the people who are teaching them as well as those who are taking them along side me, and for The Lasso. Sometimes, I think maybe we are too full of expectations. We come to class with blank notebooks and too often, blank minds. We rely on our professors and even our peers to mold us and to define the school year for us. For the 2007-2007 academic year, I challenge you to take control. By communicating with The Lasso, you have a voice and a chance to be heard. You have a chance to influence what goes into The Lasso and therefore a chance to influence what everyone in the TWU community is reading and talking about.

Always remember, TWU is your school, and The Lasso is your paper. I strongly encourage you to write to us with your questions, concerns, articles ideas, and opinions. Hearing from the student body and the people who make TWU what it is helps ensure that The Lasso is doing its job as a resource. I do not make a habit of making a lot of promises for fear that I cannot keep them, but I promise you all this: If you make the effort to be heard, then The Lasso will make the effort to listen.

I wish everyone the best of luck this year!
