Non-Thesis Option (36 hours)

Core Requirements (6 hrs):

  • KINS 5023 Methods of Research
  • KINS 5033 Applied Statistical Principles

Required Exercise Physiology Courses (24 hrs):

  • KINS 5553 Advanced Exercise Physiology
  • KINS 5563 Biophysiological Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5573 Graded Exercise Testing
  • KINS 5583 Hormonal Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5613 Cardiovascular Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5653 Strength and Physical Fitness
  • KINS 5663 Body Composition and Weight Management
  • KINS 5911 Exercise Physiology Seminar (repeated for a total of 3 hrs)

Research (3 hrs):

The student must complete 3 hrs of lab-based independent study. This could be inside or outside the Department, contingent upon approval by the Advisory Committee.

Internship (3 hrs):

Students in the Non-Thesis option must complete one internship (180 contact hours) in Either a clinical or wellness setting. This is arranged individually through the Internship Coordinator and approved by the Advisory Committee. In addition to completing the internship, the student must prepare an Internship Portfolio containing the following items:

  • Description of the Internship site
  • List of duties and responsibilities.
  • Evaluation by on-site supervisor
  • Critical evaluation of the internship site with recommendations for improvement.
  • Detailed plan for establishment of your ideal clinical or wellness program.

The Internship Portfolio is presented to the Advisory Committee for review.

Thesis Option (30 hours)

Core Requirements (6 hrs):

  • KINS 5033 Applied Statistical Principles

Required Exercise Physiology Courses (15 hrs):

  • KINS 5553 Advanced Exercise Physiology
  • KINS 5573 Graded Exercise Testing
  • KINS 5613 Cardiovascular Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5653 Strength and Physical Fitness
  • KINS 5911 Exercise Physiology Seminar (repeated for a total of 3 hrs)

Specialization Courses (3 hrs):

  • KINS 5563 Biophysiological Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5583 Hormonal Responses to Exercise
  • KINS 5663 Body Composition and Weight Management

Thesis Research (6 hrs):

  • KINS 5983 Thesis I
  • KINS 5993 Thesis II

Before beginning thesis work, the student must form a research committee consisting of at least three Graduate faculty members. Thesis I involves selecting the research question (with the guidance of the Research Committee) and preparing the Prospectus. Thesis II involves conducting, writing, and defending the Thesis project. Thesis II cannot e taken until the Prospectus is officially approved and submitted to the Graduate School.
