What is Lecture Capture?
Lecture capture software is designed to capture the lecture activity and content from a face to face class meeting in a digital recording for students to review at a later time. The ability for students to review the course lectures in this format allows the student to focus deeper on the lecture details from the class. Lecture capture tools have been identified as key contributors in affecting student success rates in achieving course goals.
Lecture Capture is a new addition to the classroom instructional technology suite of applications and services to the TWU community.
How will I use Lecture Capture?
Faculty can submit a self-service work order or call the I.T. Help Desk. CIT contacts the instructor and consults with them providing all pertinent information needed. Once recorded, the faculty’s lecture file is sent to a server where faculty can edit and post the publication for student’s use. Faculty can choose to automatically publish their lectures or release at a selected time.
Where is it available?
A Lecture Capture solution is available on all TWU campuses. ISS provided initial availability in selected classrooms during Fall semester 2010. We are continuing exploration through Tegrity Campus.
What is the benefit?
Lecture capture tools have been utilized throughout the United States to enhance student learning experiences.
How will the recording be managed?
Recorded lectures are intended to enhance the instructional delivery and educational experience for the student. Lecture recordings will remain on file for 18 months. After that time, they will be removed from the server. Faculty may archive the lectures via download to DVD. Student access is managed through Blackboard. Students cannot post the recorded lectures in other third party applications without appropriate permission.
Who has access to the recording?
Students enrolled in the course which is being recorded will have access to the recording. TWU’s LMS, Blackboard, provides the course shell where the recorded content will be accessed. Blackboard requires an authenticated login. Please do not share content or login information with anyone. All faculty, staff, and students must adhere to the Computer Use Policies of the University. Faculty and students using the system should be careful to not compromise the privacy of either themselves or other users. Any additional distribution of the recorded lecture must be coordinated at the request of the presenter who explicitly grants permission to make it available for other purposes via a signed agreement. Faculty are responsible for being familiar with FERPA regulations in regards to sharing student information.
What about copyright and privacy?
TWU Board of Regent’s Intellectual Property Policy 2.2 and 2.5.1 gives definition to author owned and TWU owned materials. You can also find the U.S. Copyright Office Fair Use Policy at http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html
What is important to remember with lecture recording is that any materials such as PowerPoint slides or internet resources will be captured. For digital rights management purposes, faculty are reminded that the use of copyrighted materials in the lecture will be recorded. It is highly recommended that faculty obtain copyright clearance on any material referenced in or used during lectures. Furthermore, while the emphasis of the recording is on the lecture and supporting materials, student inquiries and discussions could potentially be recorded as well. Faculty are encouraged to keep that in mind when recording their class and to include this information in the class syllabus so students are aware that they may be recorded.
