Death Benefits
Basic and Supplemental Term Life
Your enrollment in health coverage through the Employees Retirement System (ERS) includes a $5,000 basic term life insurance for you only with $5,000 of AD&D coverage, effective the first of the month following your 90th day of employment.
To further protect your family in the event of your death, you may purchase additional term life insurance. During your first 31 days of employment, you may enroll in term life insurance coverage at one or two times your salary. This is the only time that you can enroll in this coverage without going through
the
EOI
application process. You may also enroll in term life insurance coverage at three or four times your salary, but EOI
approval is required.
In addition to the term life coverage, you may elect to enroll you
and/or your family in an Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy which will cover
accidental death and certain accidental injuries.
You may also elect to enroll your dependents in a basic
dependent term life policy which gives them the same coverage as the employee's basic term life insurance above.
Employee Death and Survivor Benefits
An active member in the Teacher Retirement System
(TRS) has coverage for TRS death benefits. This coverage
is effective on the first day of TRS-covered employment. Upon
the death of an active TRS member, the beneficiary is eligible to receive an amount equal to two times
the employee's annual salary up to a maximum payment of $80,000, or one of several other payment plans.
