PURPOSE
The purpose of this Texas Woman's University Operating Policy and Procedure is to promote safer working conditions for employees in jobs that require heavy lifting, hazardous, or physically strenuous work.

POLICY/PROCEDURE
The use of back support belts can help help employees work better and feel better. Back support belts provide support for the back and the abdomen. The design of the belts serve as a reminder to use proper lifting techniques.

Employees will receive instruction on proper lifting techniques and use of the back support belt. Supervisors will periodically retrain employees on proper lifting techniques and the appropriate use of the belt.

The University will make available back support belts to custodians, movers, and other Physical Plant employees. Back support belts will be issued to other employees who request them. Employees should request back support belts through their supervisor.

Back support belts will be numbered, and supervisors will issue the belts to individuals who request them. Belts may not be taken home, but must remain in the designated location.  Employees are to return the belts at the termination of employment to the University.
