Graduate Assistantships
Graduate students who have been unconditionally admitted into a graduate
degree program and have been enrolled at TWU for at least 1 semester are
eligible to apply for a graduate research assistantship or teaching assistantship
in the Dept. of Nutrition & Food Sciences. Research assistants assist
individual professors in conducting research. Teaching assistants may supervise
laboratories or teach introductory courses. Students should contact the
NFS Dept. Chair for information on teaching assistantships. A student should
contact her/his major advisor or other individual professors for information
on research assistantships.
Applications for assistantships may be secured from the NFS Dept. Chair
or the Graduate School. The completed application must be filed with the
NFS Chair for review.
A graduate teaching assistant who is working toward a Master's degree
may be assigned to work in undergraduate courses only. A graduate teaching
assistant who holds a master's degree and is working toward a doctoral
degree is also normally assigned to work only with undergraduate courses.
The normal course load for a 1/2 time graduate assistant is 9 semester
hours. The maximum course load for a 1/2 time graduate assistant is 12
semester hours. The minimum course load for a 1/2 time graduate assistant
is 6 semester hours with special permission of the Associate Vice President
for Research and Dean of the Graduate School.
Stipends for all assistantships are set annually by the TWU Vice President
for Academic Affairs. Stipends for doctoral graduate assistants are higher
than those at the master's level. A waiver of out-of-state tuition may
be granted to eligible graduate assistants employed at least 1/2 time.
A new application must be submitted by the student before the end of
the appointment period if the student wishes to have the appointment renewed.
