Teacher Certification Track

 Overview

Physical Education Teacher Certification is one of the emphasis areas in the Department of Kinesiology at Texas Woman’s University.  Being a part of the teacher certification program opens many avenues of opportunity.  Completion of the degree and certification through passing the TExES (given by the State of Texas) provides the certified physical educator the possibility of a career in elementary physical education, secondary physical education, and coaching.

Other leadership and employment opportunities for the certified teacher educator include sports camp employment, ropes facilitation, chairmanship of physical education departments at the local school level, physical education supervisory positions at district/county levels and director of athletics.

The professional organizations for educators in physical education are the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD), and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).  Through membership and participation in these state and national organizations, physical educators are afforded many opportunities to impact the current and future status of physical education in public schools.

A student interested in becoming a physical educator has two choices within the all-level certification program.  For those interested in becoming an elementary or secondary physical educator and/or coach the degree plan to follow is All-Level Physical Education Teacher Certification-Kinesiology.  If you are interested in working with students with disabilities the appropriate degree plan is Adapted Physical Education Teacher Certification-Kinesiology.  Please see Dr. French for the specifics about this program.

All certification majors are encouraged to prepare for a second teaching field at the secondary level.  Currently the State of Texas permits teachers with initial certification to take other certification exams.  When you become certified in physical education you will have initial certification.  By preparing for a second teaching area during your time at TWU you will be ready immediately to take the TExES.  Teachers with the certifications in more than one subject matter area are highly marketable.  Please see Dr. Senne for second teaching field opportunities.

 Adapted Physical Education

Today in the United States, it is estimated that 95 percent of school-aged students are being provided physical education instruction in some type of general physical education environment.  These students include persons with disabilities.  There is a clear need to prepare general physical educators to provide the appropriate services to all students.

Texas Woman’s University is the only University in the state of Texas that prepares physical education majors with these specialized competencies to take the Adapted Physical Education National Exam.  This certification allows physical educators the right to call themselves Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE).  In addition, these students graduate with a second teaching field in special education.

Most of the graduates of this program will teach and/or coach in the public schools.  The average starting salary, depending on the school district is estimated between $28,000 to $30,000 for a 10-month period.  During the summer many physical educators work at summer sports camps, teach summer school, or take graduate courses.  This program provides a unique opportunity for physical educators to make themselves more employable and more capable to meet the needs of all children.
