Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Web Site

The IDEA ACT of 2004 was signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 3, 2004.  As the nation’s special education law, IDEA strengthens academic expectations and accountability for approximately 6.8 million children and youth with disabilities.  IDEA bridges the gap that has too often existed between what children with disabilities learn and what is required in curriculum.  This site provides the newest amendments in effect as well as a reference spot for national laws and regulations.

Internet Resources for Special Children (IRSC)

The IRSC web site is dedicated to children and youth with disabilities and other health related disorders worldwide. IRSC provides valuable information to parents, family members, caregivers, friends, educators, and medical professionals who providing children and youth services and support .Creating positive changes and enhancing public awareness and knowledge of children and youth with disabilities and other health related disorders.  IRSC offers access to recent news articles and books and acting as a central starting point that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities.

National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD)

NCPAD is an information center concerned with physical activity and disability. The mission of the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) is to promote substantial health benefits that can be gained from participating in regular physical activity. This site provides information and resources that can enable people with disabilities to become more physically active.

PALAESTRA

The Palaestra journal is a forum of sport, physical education and recreation for those with disabilities which provides parents, instructors, and athletes with disabilities information in all aspects of physical activity, sport, and recreation making them the best advocates for their children, students, or themselves during Individualized Education Program (IEP) discussions, sports activities, or community recreation activities.  It also serves to increase the knowledge base of professionals working with children or adults with disabilities.

PE Central

PE Central’s website provides information for health and physical education teachers, parents, and students.  The latest information about developmentally appropriate physical education programs for children and youth can be found on this website.  It provides lesson ideas for educators to use and allows educators to post lesson plans.  PE Central has a specific section on adapted physical education, where lesson plans with modifications, modified equipment, and research articles are supplied

Physical Activity for All: Professional Enhancement Program

This website offers multimedia and distance learning materials based on a Physical Activity for All (PAFA) program.  It provides information on obtaining and the usage of PAFA DVD’s.  This website gives information on writing grant proposals, as well as, numerous links that are similar in context.

Project Inspire

Project INSPIRE is a massive collection of adapted physical education information.  This website has specific resources divided into sections on specific disabilities, activities for people with disabilities, information on advocacy and laws, as well as health and safety.  Resources for educators including teaching and inclusion strategies, coaching and sports, recreational activities, and information regarding transition and community integration for people with disabilities can also be located on this website.

Sport Information Research Center (SIRC)

The SIRC Sport Research website was founded as a resource for coaches, athletes, sports medicine professionals and sporting organizations.  SIRC is utilized as one of the top research databases for sports medicine.  SIRC’s research database SportDiscus specializes in medicine and physical activity.  Many health professionals and students utilize this database.  The SIRC strives to serve the academic, medical, sport, corporate, and the governmental communities with its services and world of sports information.

Special Olympics

This site is a great resource to locate for information about the organization and opportunities for involvement in the program.  The site also includes everything from the Special Olympics mission statement to a history of the Special Olympics movement.  Find a Special Olympics location near you.  Links to other resource sites and Special Olympics volunteer forms can be found at this site.  Various volunteer positions and coaching positions are made available on the site.  The question and answer portion of the site has a variety of helpful information about the organization and people with disabilities.

Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic recreation is the provision of Treatment Services and the provision of Recreation Services to persons with illnesses or disabling conditions. The primary purposes of Treatment Services, which are often referred to as Recreational Therapy, are to restore, remediate or rehabilitate in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. The primary purposes of Recreational Services are to provide recreation resources and opportunities in order to improve health and well-being.

Funded by Sportime International, Thera-Talk brings participants from all over the world into a community to ask and answer therapy-related questions, as well as, share ideas and inspirations with other professionals.

PELINKS4U

PELINKS4U is a non-profit program of Central Washington University dedicated to promoting active and healthy lifestyles.  The organization website offers valuable resources for all levels of physical education, adapted physical education, coaching, health/nutrition, and technology in physical education.

American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness (AAALF)

It serves professionals conducting programs of physical activity and fitness and the professors who train them.  AAALF, advocates for under-represented populations and interests.  There are links to other organizations such as AAHPERD, APENS exams, programs for older adults, adapted aquatics, TESA and adapted PE TOY.

American Alliance Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD)

AAHPERD stands for American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  It is an alliance of six national associations, six district associations, and a research consortium which support healthy lifestyles through high quality programs.  This website has several links such as, AAHE, AALR, NAGWS, NASPE, NDA, AALR, and periodicals.

Texas Woman’s University APE Website

TWU Department of Kinesiology has expanded the adapted physical education program and implemented an accessible source of information for students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level via the web.  The website provides information about the APE program, upcoming events, alumni, and resources.
