B.S. Degree in Health Studies

University students

The Health Studies Department of Texas Woman's University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Studies. This degree prepares health educators in the skills necessary to assess, design, implement, and evaluate behavior change programs that promote wellness and prevent disease. Such programs exist in a variety of community settings including public health departments, work site health promotion programs, schools, non-profit health organizations, government health agencies, and clinics/hospitals.

Degree Options

Health Studies majors may choose between three focal areas of study.  Brief descriptions are provided below.  Click on each program option for a list of required courses.

Community Health

Health Studies majors who select the Community Health Area of Study are generally interested in employment in a wide variety of community health settings including worksite wellness programs, public health departments, healthcare systems, schools, voluntary health associations and other community health agencies. Although most graduates seek employment immediately following graduation, several consider the eventual possibility of entering a health-related master's degree program. These include master's degree programs in Public Health, Health Education/Promotion, and Health Care Administration.

Community Health Fall 2007 Curriculum  This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

Community Health Fall 2004 Curriculum  This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2004 semester or after.

Community Health All Level Education 2007 Curriculum. Teaching Certification. This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

BS/MOT Prep

Health Studies majors who are interested in working toward a Master's in Occupational Therapy, can complete this degree on the TWU Denton Campus in a shortened time frame. Students who maintain the application requirements are eligible to APPLY in their junior year of study. (no admittance guarantee!) For information regarding the minimum GPA requirement for Master’s in Occupational Therapy, will need to contact that specific department at 940-898-2801.

MOT Prep Fall 2007 Curriculum  This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

MOT Prep Fall 2004 Curriculum  This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2004 semester or after.

Master’s Prep

Health Studies majors who are interested in working toward a Master's or Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Public Health,  Library Science, or Social Work may select one of the Master’s Prep Areas of Study.  For information on the Master’s Programs, contact the specific department.  Those admitted will complete the B.S. in Health Studies degree while taking preparation courses for the Master’s program.  Other Master’s prep options are also available. Master’s prep tracks may be customized according to the required prerequisites of the advanced degree. See the Health Studies advisor for more details.

Master’s Prep Fall 2007 Curriculum  This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

Master’s Prep Fall 2004 Curriculum This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2004 semester or after.

BS-DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) Fast Track This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

BS-DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) Non-Fast Track This degree worksheet is for students who began taking Health Studies courses during the Fall 2007 semester or after.

How to become an
Undergraduate Health Studies Major

  • Gain acceptance to TWU (if you are not already a TWU student)
  • Read all the information provided on this website pertaining to the Health Studies program.
  • Obtain an updated copy of your transcript from the Registrar’s Office or through Portal.
  • Verify that your cumulative GPA is at least 2.75 (our minimum GPA requirement for program entry).
  • Call the Health Studies Department (940/898-2860) and register for a Health Studies Info Session.
  • Attend a Health Studies Info Session. Bring your transcript and any other pertinent information with you.
