Curriculum for

Master of Science Degree

In Health Studies (Effective Fall 2008)

  Prerequisites/Corequisites:

  • Bachelor's degree in health education/promotion/public health
  • HS 5003 Practicum in Health Education must be taken after core courses are completed by students without CHES certification
  • Attendance of HS Graduate colloquium within one year of admission

Core Curriculum (21 hours):

  • HS 5413 Current Issues
  • HS 5353 Epidemiology
  • HS 5383 Program Development and Coordination
  • HS 5423 Ethnic & Cultural Factors in Health
  • HS 6443 Foundations in Health Science
  • HS 6453 Strategies in Health Education Delivery
  • HS 6483 Evaluation in Health Education

Select ONE Focal Areas (6 hrs for thesis option; 9 hrs for non-thesis option):

Higher Education

  • HS 5103 Principles and Methods of Teaching Health Professionals
  • HS 5113 Curriculum Development for Health Professionals
  • HS 5003 Practicum (non-thesis)

Community/Population Health

  • HS 5363 Population Health
  • HS 6563 Health Advocacy and Leadership
  • HS 5003 Practicum (non-thesis)

Worksite Health

  • HS 5343 Risk Reduction
  • HS 5613 Worksite Health Promotion
  • HS 5003 Practicum (non-thesis)

MS students will choose to pursue either the Thesis option OR the non-Thesis option.

(Thesis Option):

  • 6 hours of Thesis
  • 6 hours of Focal Area
  • 9 hours of Assessment/Research Tools

For the thesis option, the defense of the thesis will be the final examination.

(Non-Thesis Option):

  • 6 hours of Departmental Electives
  • 9 hours Focal Area
  • 6 hours of Assessment/Research Tools
For the non-thesis option, a written comprehensive examination based on the core coursework is required. Students taking the comprehensive examination are required to score 70% or better and it may be taken more than once. The examination will be given at the close of HS 6483.
