Dental Hygiene Program

Programs

The Dental Hygiene Program offers two curriculums of study:

The Bachelors Degree is designed for students who wish to complete all dental hygiene course work at TWU. It includes core curriculum courses such as English, history, government and women's studies. Science courses like human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and nutrition, which serve as the basis for more advanced courses in the major, are taken also. Some of these courses may be taken at another college or university, but it is recommended that you first consult an adviser at TWU about your degree plan.

The Degree Completion Program is designed for students who have completed their initial dental hygiene course work at a certificate or associated degree awarding college and become licensed to practice. They then enroll at TWU to complete advanced level dental hygiene and core courses to complete a bachelor's degree.

Dental hygiene courses are spread across four years of the degree plan, and they are integrated with core curriculum and basic science classes. The Freshman-level dental hygiene course is open to any interested students. Beginning with the sophomore level, the dental hygiene courses are limited to students who have been officially admitted to the program by the Dental Hygiene Selection Committee.

Clinical courses in the dental hygiene major begin at the junior level and continue through the senior year. A modern, well equipped dental hygiene clinic provides you with supervised clinical experience to develop and build the knowledge and skill competencies needed for practice.

A senior-level practicum course, community dental health courses, and clinical rotations provide you with off-campus experiences in a variety of practice settings and community programs in the Denton-Dallas-Forth Worth area. These acquaint you with career opportunities in dental hygiene and give you important contacts for future jobs.

Classes are small and the faculty work closely with students providing academic and career counseling to help you achieve your educational goals.

The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of approval  since 1974. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at (312) 440-4653 or at 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611.
