Dental Hygiene Instructor and StudentThe Dental Hygiene Program at TWU has a degree-completion curriculum designed for dental hygienists who received their certificate or associate degree in dental hygiene and wish to complete their requirements for a bachelor's degree. Requirements for admission are:

  • A license to practice in at least one state (submit copy of license)
  • Completion of the TWU Dental Hygiene Degree-Completion Application
  • Completion of the State of Texas Common Application for Transfer/Transient/Readmit to Texas Public Universities
  • Submission of official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended (submit to Admissions and to Dental Hygiene Program)

  • Receipt of notification of admission to TWU

Length of enrollment to complete the bachelor's degree

A student who is enrolled full-time can complete the course work required to complete the Bachelor's of Dental Hygiene Degree at TWU in 12 - 18 months. The actual length of time needed for students to finish their studies at TWU depends on the previous college credits they have earned and whether they attend as full-time students (carry 12 credits hours per semester or more) or as part-time students. There is no time limit to complete bachelor's degree requirements. Most degree-completion students choose to work as a dental hygienist part-time and register as a part-time student, taking longer to complete the degree.

Career outlook for dental hygienists with the BSDH degree

Completion of the TWU dental hygiene degree-completion curriculum updates the hygienists' professional skills, advances their knowledge and qualifies them to accept a position in a dental hygiene setting beyond a traditional dental office. Additional career opportunities are available in community health departments, public school systems, hospital dental departments, state and federal agencies, businesses and corporations related to dentistry, and certificate and associate degree dental hygiene education programs. Hygienists with the BSDH are also eligible to apply to graduate or professional schools.

Degree requirements

Students who enroll in the TWU dental hygiene degree-completion curriculum must meet the basic requirements of the university in order to be awarded the bachelor of science degree. These include completion of 124 credit hours, of which 36 must be advanced level credits (junior or senior level courses). Thirty of the last 36 hours in the TWU degree plan must be completed in residence.

The university has a requirement of 42 hours of core curriculum courses. If a student has completed the 42 hour core curriculum requirement at another Texas college or university, they are not required to complete the TWU core. All degree plans are individually designed to meet the special needs and interests of each student. Students may transfer up to 72 credit hours from a community college; there is no limit on the number of hours transferred from a four-year college or university. Some of the student's previous dental hygiene courses will also transfer to TWU as dental hygiene en bloc credits. The specific number of dental hygiene credits that will transfer will be determined by the student's dental hygiene adviser.

The dental hygiene major must include at least 30 semester hours of dental hygiene courses. Six credit hours may be earned in cooperative education through employment as a dental hygienist in an approved job setting. Only three credit hours of cooperative education, however, will count towards the hours required in the major.

A minimum of 14 hours in the dental hygiene major must be completed at TWU and must be advanced level courses selected from those dental hygiene courses offered at TWU. The student selects courses that will balance previous training. DH 4102 Dental Hygiene Research is the only required Dental Hygiene course.

One of the following seven to eight hour Tracks in Dental Hygiene composed of both dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene advanced level courses, is also required:
  • Research
  • Public Health
  • Clinical Practice
  • Dental Hygiene Education
  • Administration/Management
Students select the dental hygiene track they wish to pursue at the beginning of their enrollment at TWU. The track chosen should reflect the student's long-term career goals. Their degree plan is then made accordingly, with the assistance of their adviser. For more information on the program, track and course requirement see Distance Education at http://www.twu.edu/de/ .

Distance Education Options

The university offers online courses and online programs.  The core curriculum and elective hours related to the track can be completed online.  Dental hygiene hours can be completed from a distance through selected online courses, cooperative education, internships and independent study.  Limited visits tot he campus may be required to meet with an advisor or internship supervisor.
