The TWU Dental Hygiene Program is one of the oldest in Texas. Approximately 650 students have graduated from the program since it began in 1971. There were five students in the first graduating class. Today 24-26 students are admitted each year.

The program prepares graduates to practice in both traditional private dental offices and many nontraditional settings such as hospital, institutional and public health clinics. They are also eligible to serve as faculty in associate degree dental hygiene education programs, work as sales representatives and managers for dental retail businesses, serve in research positions in private and public agencies, be employed by dental insurance companies, and advance to graduate or professional school. Texas Woman's University is a peaceful, beautiful campus. The Denton campus is located in Denton, Texas which has a  small town atmosphere with all the benefits of living within easy reach of both Dallas and Fort Worth.

The program has had an active Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists' Association since it began. As a result, many graduates have gone on to hold leadership positions in their professional associations.

The Program offices are located in the Old Main building on the Denton Campus. This building is one of Denton's historic treasures and has been designated as a Texas Historical Building. Old Main was "The Girls' Industrial Institute and College of Texas" and opened in 1901. Administration offices, classrooms, and the dormitory were all contained within its doors.
