Speech-Language Pathology Program

The TWU master's degree program in Speech-Language Pathology has two different learning venues.

The on-campus venue admits students in summer and fall and provides classes in Denton, TX as well as clinical experiences throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The TETN distance learning venue runs in cycles and admits students prior to the beginning of each cycle.  This venue is offered to students across the state of Texas through partnerships with Education Service Centers, school districts, and medical facilities state-wide.

Prerequisites

The graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology requires a foundation in the development of speech, language and hearing.  This information is typically mastered at the undergraduate level or through a prerequisite leveling sequence.

Speech-Language Pathologists

  • Are knowledgeable about the nature, evaluation and treatment of all types of communication problems that affect interpersonal communication.

  • Determine the extent to which they can provide and/or recommend adequate services for habilitation or rehabilitation of persons with disorders of:
     

     

    • speech (i.e., articulation, fluency, resonance, voice)

    • language (i.e., phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic/social aspects of communication)

    • swallowing or other upper aerodigestive functions

    • cognitive aspects of communication (e.g., attention, memory, problem solving, executive functions.

     

     
      Speech-Language Pathologists:
    • are responsible for conducting research as well as the assessment and management of speech, hearing and language problems.
    • must pass a national professional qualifying examination
    • are employed in:

       

      •  Public Schools •  Health Centers
       Hospitals •  University Settings
      •  Private Clinics •  Government Agencies
