Outstanding Features
Faculty: The TWU Deaf Education program has an
outstanding faculty with many years of experience in the field. Faculty have
experience as teachers, curriculum writers for the State of Texas and other states,
researchers, program directors of preschools and elementary schools, consultants to
a wide variety of programs, authors of tests and texts, and as expert witnesses.
Program: The TWU Deaf Education program is flexible in nature and accommodates a wide
range of individuals with widely varied backgrounds. Students currently in the
program are graduates of undergraduate programs in business, bilingual education,
English, speech-language pathology, regular education, special education,
interpreting and psychology, etc.
Educational Practicum Experiences
/ Student Teaching
Local Area (LA) Students are able to engage in student teaching/practicum
experiences in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. These experiences are arranged for through
the College of Professional Education during the spring semester of each academic year.
TWU has an excellent working relationship with many school districts in the metroplex area.
While courses are online, LA students are able to meet regularly on campus with faculty for
personal dialogue and question and answer sessions.
Texas Students who do not have an initial
teaching certificate must complete 14 weeks of student teaching
in a public classroom setting. Texas students who do have
an initial teching certificate must complete a 7 week practicum.
Off-Campus/Online (OO) Students are also required to do student teaching and/or
have practicum experiences; however, it is variable depending upon their experience as teachers. ‘Practicum experiences’ are handled on an individual basis. Typically, OO students are required to
work closely with a cooperating teacher on site and provide a specified number of video tapes of
their teaching to be critiqued by TWU faculty as well.
Out-Of-State students must check with their
State Board of Education to obtain certification requirements
and courses needed.
