The Texas Woman's University Counseling Center is the campus agency designated to provide psychological services to students. These services are designed to help students achieve their educational goals, learn the process of problem solving, develop the capacity for satisfying relationships, and learn to make full use of their potential for continued growth beyond their educational experience.

Services Offered

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING--Students may receive help for any social, emotional, educational, or vocational issues. Examples of concerns for which students have sought help in the past include: relationships, career decisions, confusion about intimacy, sexual values, stress overload, grief and loss, identity concerns, and depression.

CAREER COUNSELING--The goal in career exploration is to assist students in developing an awareness of their intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs, and in integrating this information into their career decisions.

CRISIS COUNSELING--Immediate assistance is available on a walk-in basis for students experiencing crisis situations. When the Counseling Center is closed, a counselor is available through the TWU Department of Public Safety. Students should call (713) 794-2222 and request that the counselor on-call be notified of their immediate need for assistance.

COUPLES COUNSELING--Couples may seek marital, premarital, divorce, sexual adjustment, or alternative lifestyle counseling. Counseling is available to the student and her or his partner.

FAMILY COUNSELING--If appropriate, sessions may be arranged to include family members and significant others. Issues addressed may include family of origin, blended or step-families, and family role expectations.

WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING SEMINARS--Staff members will consult with and develop specific programs or presentations for: faculty, residence hall groups, campus organizations, and the campus community.

SELF-HELP MATERIALS--A wide variety of pamphlets, brochures, and handouts are available to students in the reception area of the Counseling Center. Additional self-help information is available at: http://ub-counseling.buffalo.edu/.

The Staff

Counselors provide a safe and caring environment in which students may explore their concerns. All staff members adhere to the ethical principles of the American Psychological Association.

Confidentiality

Because counseling is a personal matter, the Counseling Center maintains confidentiality to the limits provided by law. No record of counseling is contained in any academic, educational, or job placement file, and information about counseling is only released with the student=s written permission. The only exception would be in cases mandated by law, such as imminent danger to self or others; abuse of children, the elderly, or the disabled; sexual exploitation of therapy clients by therapists; or court subpoena.

Eligibility for Service

Services are available to TWU students registered for the semester in which they are requesting services. When appropriate, spouses, significant others, roommates, and family members may be seen in counseling with the student.

How to Set Up an Appointment

Counseling sessions are scheduled by appointment. The initial appointment (called an Aintake@) allows the student and a counselor to explore the nature of the student=s concerns, problems, and goals and to determine which resources available at the Counseling Center, or another agency, are best suited to the student=s needs. Students may call (713-794-2059) or drop by the Counseling Center (103 NRH) to schedule an appointment.

Hours of Operation

In general, counselors at the Houston Center try to be flexible in arranging their schedules to meet the specific needs of students. In addition, counselors are usually, though not always, available Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Costs

There are no costs to the student for counseling services.
