First Year Connections
The First Year Connections (FYC) Program was implemented in the Fall of 2003 with the concept that providing additional learning communities within the residential environment and was an important factor in the mission and vision of the department. The program is similar to the NET program in terms of students residing together on a specific floor and enrolling in a section of UNIV 1011.
FYC participants live in a clustered living community focused on one of the three following topics community service (TWU Serves Connection), global perspectives (Global Perspectives Connection) or are co-participants in the SUCCESS program (SUCCESS Connection). Upper class students, who are FYC alumna, serve as the RAs (resident assistants) and PAs (peer advisors) for the communities. The RAs and PAs live on the floors with FYC students in Stark or Guinn Hall, providing valuable resources and assistance to the residents in the community.
First Year Connections are implemented through the collaboration of several departments on campus; the Center for Student Development, College of Arts and Sciences and Office of Intercultural Studies. These three communities are designed to meet student’s needs in those specific areas of interest. Students receive the same academic support as NET students with the goal of increasing retention. Two communities are housed in Stark Hall and one community in Guinn Hall.
Students Can Expect from FYC:

*Classroom learning extended to the residence hall
*A means to address social and academic concerns
To participate in the FYC program you must:
1. Be admitted to TWU.
2. Residential FYC Participants Only--Return your housing application and $125 deposit and application fee or apply online with credit card payment (If you returned your housing application and $125 fee earlier, simply return your completed Living Learning Community application. The $50 activity fee will be billed to your student account.)
3. Return your completed LLC application by June 1 to the Department of University Housing at the address indicated on the application or email as an attachment to email@example.com.
4. Your high school transcript must be on file at the TWU Admissions Office.
Acceptance to the FYC program will be made on a date-order, space-available basis for applicants who meet the program requirements. A maximum of 25 students will be accepted to each learning community. Residential participants will live in Stark Hall or Guinn Hall. Exact housing placements will be made after students have attended New Student Orientation and FYC participants are selected.
Enrollment & Orientation
Students interested in the FYC program can attend a special Living Learning Community session during New Student Orientation. This session will give students an opportunity to meet the faculty, staff, and other students involved in the FYC program. New Student Orientation is offered several times during the summer. Students interested in the FYC program should attend orientation in June as space is very limited and offered on a first come first served basis.
