History 5903.04, Tuesdays 2:30-5:20
Taught by Dr. Kate Landdeck, Associate Professor

Learn about life in the United States in the years after World War II through September 11th. Consider the space race, various rights movements, the expanding and changing economy, the creation of the teenager, changing music and entertainment, social upheavals, the Korean and Vietnam wars and their influence on all aspects of society, the expansion of the social-welfare state, and how the Cold War worked as an underlying current to all of it.

As a part of their grade for this course, students will be creating a syllabus on a narrower topic from the time period (ie: Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, Women’s Movement, Cold War, etc.). The creation of the syllabus will include development of themes, selection of readings, organization of lectures (although not writing of full lectures), and a written and oral defense/justification of these portions of the syllabus. Students will share their syllabus with classmates, thus each student should leave the class with a number of syllabi  on these topics. Students should also expect to read extensively and to present the main arguments of their article/books in class discussion.
