Student Accomplishments

Undergraduate Students

  • Bianca Faria, (2008) received a paid internship with the U.S. Food Drug and Administration, national headquarters in Washington, DC. 
  • Loan Tran, (2008), landed a full-time position from her internship site, U.S. Food Drug and Administration, regional headquarters in Dallas, TX as a consumer safety officer.  Her responsibilities include inspecting FDA-regulated facilities, conducting recall audit checks, and sample collections of food products.

Graduate Students

  • Amy Clark, BA, (2009) a current master's graduate student in health studies, partnered with Senator Jane Nelson (R-Lewisville) and House Representative Roy Guillen (D-Rio Grande City), Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA), and the Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) to testify before Texas Congress in favor of House Bill 2577 and SB 83 which expands lease termination options to family violence and sexual assault victims not living with their abusers.  This legislation becomes law effective January 1, 2010. Because of her advocacy efforts, Ms. Amy Clark was thanked as a partner and advocate in the 2009 81st Legislative Update published by the Texas Council on Family Violence.
  • Barbara Barton, MS, RN, (2009) a current doctoral graduate student in health studies, has been chosen as a board member for Texas Society for Public Health Education (TSOPHE).  TSOPHE is a regional affiliate of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), a national professional service organization formed to promote the health of all people.  TSOPHE's mission is to advocate for the profession and provide stewardship for the discipline of public health education.
  • Cynthia Johnson, MS, CHES, (2008) was one of only two graduate students in the nation to receive the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) 2008 Health Education Student Support Award.  The 2008 Health Education Advocacy Summit, sponsored by the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations, consisted of advocacy training, seminars on issue-specific legislative priorities and congressional visits with legislators and key staff of public health issues. 
  • Ashley Walker, PhD, (2008) is currently employed as an assistant professor at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) for the Master's of Public Health program in community health and and an affiliate faculty for Colorado School of Public Health.  UNC is an affiliate university of the Colorado School of Public Health, a consortium of UNC, University of Colorado-Denver, and Colorado State University.

This Summer, Study Abroad in Belize! June 22nd-29th, 2010

The department of Health Studies offers a trip to Belize for undergraduate OR graduate students every Summer III.  This field course includes: studies in biology, ecology and conservation of Antillean manatees, bottle-nose dolphins and Loggerhead sea turtles, along with GIS mappng and boat surveys. Price: $1,109.00 includes:

  • 8 days, 7 nights (Airfare NOT included)
  • Transfers from airport to Caye and return
  • All meals
  • 1 Lighthouse reef trip
  • 5 half-day motorized activities
  • Bunk-house accommodations
  • Scuba diving option: Additional $158.00 which includes instruction, all gear and a dive with a trained dive master.

Health Studies Honor's Society

Welcome our New HS Graduate Academic Advisor!

The Health Studies Department has an addition to the Graduate Staff. Ms. Morgan O'Donnell is the new Graduate Academic Advisor.  If you are just getting started in the graduate program or need additional assistance with what courses to take the next semester, course codes, and other milestones along your journey, then Ms. O'Donnell can assist you.  Ms. O'Donnell's office location is CFO 1111 with office hours from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM, Mon - Fri.   She can be reached at 940-898-2864 or via email modonnell@twu.edu
