The Department of Performing Arts maintains a philosophy and practice of balancing
the skills and discipline of artistic performance with academic excellence and
scholarship in a variety of settings (e.g., on the stage, in the recital hall, in the
studio, and in clinical practice). Artistic practice and research are avenues of
scholarly inquiry are essential to all programs of study.
Faculty and students are expected to practice all facets of their arts (e.g., solo
and ensemble performance, clinical practice, theoretical studies, and critical /
historical / experimental / qualitative research).
The Department of Performing Arts offers the opportunity to continue study at
advanced levels in several professional graduate programs. It seeks to develop in each
student intellectual curiosity, scholarly habits, and performance skills sufficient and
appropriate to the selected degree plan. The Department instructs not only those
seeking a degree, but also individuals desiring additional study in the performing arts. Minor programs are available in each of the Programs of the Department. Specific programs and requirements are listed below. Additional information is available from the individual areas.
The Master of Arts Degree (M.A.) is available in Dance, Music and Theatre. The
Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are available in
Dance. All graduate programs are designed to develop the artist/teacher to work in
professional and/or academic settings.
There are numerous opportunities for performance and research with individual
faculty members. Visiting lecturers and special workshops provide additional
opportunities for students to acquire the necessary skills to excel in their chosen
field.
Music Programs in the Department of Performing Arts are accredited in full standing
with the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the American Music Therapy
Association (AMTA). The Dance Program is accredited by the National Association of
Schools of Dance (NASD). Annual participation in the American College Dance Festival,
American College Theatre Festival, National Association of Teachers of Singing
Conference (NATS) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) is encouraged.
Admission Requirements

some cases, sample of professional writing, and/or solo performance. Contact Program
