Mary Smith McCory JonesMary Smith was born on a farm in Arkansas Territory. After the death of her father, Mary's mother joined a wagon train bound for Texas Territory where the family settled in Brazoria. When Mary's mother remarried, Mary was responsible for her four siblings and six other children.
  • 1837 - Mary Smith married a young Kentuckian, Hugh McCrory. After only two months of marriage, Hugh McCrory died and Mary returned to her mother's home and assumed responsibility of the children. The family eventually moved to Austin.
  • 1840 - Mary Smith McCrory married Anson Jones, a medical doctor, who was elected senator from Brazoria. Before the marriage, Anson Jones served as Minister from the Republic of Texas to Washington, D.C. He was later appointed Texas Secretary of State.
  • 1844 - Anson Jones was elected President of the Republic of Texas. Mary Smith McCrory Jones was pregnant and did not attend the inauguration
  • 1895 - Mary Smith McCrory Jones was elected the first president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas

The gown selected to represent Mary Smith McCrory Jones is made of turquoise blue moiré taffeta with full skirt, tight bodice, short puffed sleeves, and off-the-shoulder neckline. Trimming the dress are taffeta bows and lace inserts on a front panel. The gown was presented by Mrs. George Spears and Mrs. Phil Lukor of Graham.
