The Department of Family Sciences offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development, Consumer Sciences, Family Studies, and Home Economics. Graduate degrees offered are the Master of Science degrees in Counseling and Development, Child Development, Family Studies, and Family Therapy; and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Family Studies, Child Development, and Family Therapy.

The Department of Family Sciences also operates the TWU Child Development Center and the Counseling and Family Development Clinic. The Child Development Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and serves 190 children ages 18 months to 5 years. Student observations, practicum experiences, and research take place in the Child Development Center. The Counseling and Family Development Clinic is staffed by graduate students in the Counseling and Development and Family Therapy programs under the supervision of faculty. The clinic specializes in providing counseling and therapy to individuals, couples, and families who seek help from mental health professionals.

Completion of the B.S. degree with a major in Home Economics satisfies the course requirements of Texas Education Agency for a Provisional Certificate in Vocational Home Economics.

The Child Development program prepares students for a variety of professional roles focused on serving the needs of children and their families. Included in the potential roles are: parent education, teaching young children, administration of children’s programs, public and private agencies focused on children and families; early childhood intervention; child life specialist; and other roles requiring similar knowledge and skills.

The Consumer Sciences major includes course work specifically related to consumerism plus general University requirements and a specialization in marketing. The Bachelor of Science degree prepares students for educational roles, for business consumer affairs, or for government agency positions.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies is a broad human services degree which may lead to employment working with families in social service agencies ranging from child to geriatric services to church and family planning agencies. The degree is especially appropriate for work in the business world when combined with a business minor or a second major in business. The emphasis upon developing interpersonal skills is advantageous in the business arena. It is an appropriate major for those interested in graduate degrees leading to careers in family therapy or family life education.

The Home Economics major is a broad program which includes preparation in general University requirements, and in specific subject matter areas of home economics including family life, child development, food and nutrition, housing and household equipment, management, fashion and textiles, and consumer sciences. Successful completion of this major leads to certification to teach Vocational Home Economics in the secondary schools. Early Childhood Education Endorsement: Students interested in receiving this endorsement may complete nine semester hours of specified coursework in the Department of Family Sciences and the Department of Early Childhood and Special Education plus three semester hours student teaching. Minors Available in the Department of Family Sciences

Child Development Minor

An academic minor in Child Development requires 18 semester hours of study in child development. Of these, six hours must be junior or senior level courses.

Consumer Sciences Minor

Requirements for a minor in Consumer Sciences are 18 semester hours, six of which must be advanced. Suggested minor courses include: FS 3713, 4713, 4733, 4753, or 4773 plus six additional hours in family sciences.

Family Studies Minor

An academic minor in Family Studies requires 18 semester hours of family life courses. Of those, six hours must be junior and senior level courses.
 

Family Sciences Undergraduate Courses

FS 1001. Seminar in Family Sciences. Qualities which identify family sciences as a profession; historical aspects; mission; interrelationship of specializations; and career options. One lecture hour a week. Credit: One hour.

FS 1511. Human Development Laboratory. Structured observation and participation with humans from infancy through adulthood. Corequisite: FS 1513. Three laboratory hours a week. Credit: One hour.

FS 1513. Human Development. Development from infancy through senescence; familial and societal influences; varied theoretical perspectives. Corequisite: FS 1511. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.
