The Department of Reading and Bilingual Education offers course work in three program areas: Reading, Bilingual/English as a Second Language, and Elementary Education. The principal objective of the department is to provide at the undergraduate level preparation for teachers in these areas. The department also serves the entire University with courses in curriculum, teaching methods and student teaching. All degree and certification programs in the Department of Reading and Bilingual Education at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels are fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency /State Board for Educator Certification.

Undergraduate Courses

ERDB 1003. Fundamentals of College Reading and Learning. Designed for students who need to improve reading competencies in the area of vocabulary, comprehension, and study strategies. May be repeated. Hours earned will not count toward graduation requirements.

*ERDB 3103. Elementary Curriculum Development and Instructional Methods. Application of instruction for delivering higher order thinking skills and specific curriculum content areas will be presented. Instructional adaptation for special populations. Corequisite: ELDR 3503. Three lecture hours and one and one-half laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 3113. Bilingual Education: Instructional Applications and Materials. Subject matter centers on the teaching of limited English proficiency children with particular emphasis on language assessment techniques, curriculum design, program implementation and materials. Prerequisite: Junior standing, knowledge of Spanish preferred. Observation in classrooms. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3133. Schooling in America. An overview of the American educational system including federal, state, and local structure and functions. Legal issues related to classroom instruction, including provisions for students

ERDB 3413. Reading and Related Language Arts: Elementary. Guidance and practice in planning and organizing for instruction in reading, listening, speaking, writing and thinking in elementary classrooms. Reading and language arts theory, content, and methods. Prerequisite: Junior standing. Three lecture hours and one and one-half laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 3443. Problems in the Teaching of Reading. Analysis and practice in developmental reading programs with emphasis on individualizing instruction to provide for the culturally different learner, the underachiever, the gifted, and the normally achieving pupil. Prerequisites: Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 3453. Teaching English as a Second Language. Principles and practices of teaching English as a second language, focusing attention on the multiplicity of elements in the process of teaching and learning a language. Prerequisites: ELDR 3133, ERDB 3103, and junior standing. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 3463. Secondary Content Area Reading. Methods and materials for teaching reading and related communication skills in secondary school content areas; emphasis on developing vocabulary and improving text comprehension. Three lecture hours and one and one-half laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3523. Teaching Music in Junior and Senior High Schools.

Development of the skills and understanding for teaching and organizing the curriculum of the choral, instrumental, and general music classes in the secondary school. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3583. Physical Education for the Secondary School. Analysis of the teaching/learning process in physical education at the secondary school level; curriculum construction, teaching methods, instructional media and material, class management and control, and evaluation of curriculum and instruction. Must be taken concurrently with KINS 3573. Prerequisites: Intermediate skills in designated activities and completion of KINS 1772, KINS 3591, and KINS 3592. Three lecture hours and two laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3723. Methods of Teaching Accounting and Basic Business. Special methods applicable to teaching these subjects; placement in curriculum; demonstrations; professional activities. Prerequisite: Junior standing. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3813. Curriculum and Instructional Practices in Dance. Applications of principles of teaching, and theories of dance through the design and implementation of a dance curriculum in a guided practicum setting. Prerequisites: KINS 3591, 3592, and DNCE 3212. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 3903. Methods of Teaching English. Responsibilities and aims of an effective teacher; subject matter to be taught; and methods of teaching language, literature, and composition in the secondary school. Prerequisites: ENG 1013, 1023, 2013, 2023, and 3303 or the equivalent and the approval of the instructor. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4433. Integrating Computers into the Reading/Language Arts Curriculum. Practical classroom applications for reading and language arts. Types of instructional programs using the computer for writing activities in language arts, evaluation of software, and teacher utilities are some of the topics covered. Prerequisite: ERDB 3413. Three lecture hours and one and one-half laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4453. Bilingual Acquisition Processes. Theories and research in bilingualism and its influence on learning and instruction, including developmental charactertistics of language acquisition, relationship between bilingualism and cognition, and issues in assessment of bilingual children. Prerequisite: Junior standing. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4463. Diagnostic and Remedial Reading. Diagnosis and treatment of reading difficulties; methods and materials for specialists and classroom teachers. Prerequisite: One basic course in the teaching of reading. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4473. Practicum: Clinical Teaching of Reading. Diagnostic teach-ing of reading in a one-to-one or small group (2-4) situation with weekly staffing for student and professor, analyses of pupil reading difficulties, resources, and techniques for helping the pupil. One lecture hour and four laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4483. Elementary Reading and Language Arts Across the Curriculum. Strategies for diagnosing and teaching reading, writing, oral language, listening, and thinking processes through curriculum materials of the elementary schools. Prerequisite: ERDB 3413. Three lecture hours and one and one-half laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

*ERDB 4573. Teaching School Subjects To The Hearing Impaired. Principles and methods involved in teaching arithmetic, social studies, and science to hearing-impaired, school-age children. Practical experience in teaching hearing-impaired children. Three lecture hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

ERDB 4723. Practicum in Bilingual Education. Supervised participation in public school elementary bilingual classrooms, emphasizing acquisition of direct experience with children. Prerequisites: Junior standing, ERDB 3113 and ELDR 3643, Spanish proficiency. One lecture hour and four laboratory hours a week. Credit: Three hours.

Student Teaching­Secondary and All-Level. Students enrolled in student teaching are limited to a total semester load of 16 credit hours. Student teaching may be taken only by students whose application for admission to the Teacher Education Program and Student Teaching has been accepted and who continue to maintain the qualifications for such status.
