This is Project GATEWAY
Benefits | Requirements
Project GATEWAY is a collaborative effort between Texas Woman's University and the Dallas Independent School District.
It is a No Child Left Behind grant that provides scholarships to eligible professionals interested in entering the teaching field.
Today's schools must address two exceptional demands. First, the number of K-12 English Language Learners has increased by 95% in the last decade, totaling 4.7 million (US DOE, 2003), and as a result, schools must educate a student population that continues to undergo considerable change in its cultural and linguistic diversity. Second, Under No Child Left Behind, schools are increasingly accountable for student performance, and therefore, the need for highly qualified teachers with solid background in their content areas is critical.
How will institutions of higher education face the challenge of preparing highly qualified professionals as teachers for increasingly diverse settings? One promising way to address this dilemma is through programs that integrate increased content knowledge, research-based teaching methodologies, and sound teacher induction programs which ensure future teacher's effectiveness in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms.
Project GATEWAY seeks to respond to Local Education Agency shortages of well-qualified and well-trained teachers in the areas of Bilingual Education and Mathematics/ESL.
The area covered by the Dallas ISD, GATEWAY's Partner, is diverse with students from homes where almost 70 different languages are spoken. Ninety-four percent of the district's student population and 59% of its teacher population are represented by African Americans, Hispanics, Asian and Native Americans. For this reason, Project GATEWAY encourages applications from individuals of these minorities.
Teach for Dallas
