"Let’s Have a Heart to Heart Talk," with Amanda Hinson-Enslin, MPH, RDH
Amanda M. Hinson-Enslin is an alumna of Texas Woman’s University (TWU). She first attended TWU for her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene and minor in Spanish. While attending courses in Department of Dental Hygiene, she discovered her passion for patient care, community health, and research. After graduating she decided to pursue a career in private practice. She worked in the same dental office for over seven years. While working in private practice, she pursued a Master’s of Public Health from the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNT HSC). During the time that she practiced, she enjoyed serving and treating patients daily. But with her education background she noticed there was an element that was missing in her life. She discovered that she thrived on educating people, not just patients, about their health and health conditions. The desire to educate people about health lead her to wanting a degree in health education. After a year and half break from school, Amanda decided to return to earn a doctorate in Health Studies from Texas Woman’s University and continued to work in private practice. Eventually, she left her position at the dental office to teach at TWU adjunct instructor in the Dental Hygiene Program and a graduate teaching assistant at TWU’s Department of Health Studies. She has recently co-authored four book chapters for a community dental hygiene textbook. Currently, she is formulating and writing her dissertation. Her dissertation topic is An Exploration of Health Information-Seeking Behaviors among Deaf and Hard of Hearing College Students. She is also a graduate teaching assistant at TWU where she instructs undergraduate students majoring in health studies. She is also a lecturer at the University of Texas at Dallas where she teaches pre-healthcare students about professionalism and career development.
