May 4, 2010. T-Shirt Design Competition and Fashion Show at Nelson Children's Center.
TWU Fashion and Textiles students enrolled in the Career Development Strategies course held a t-shirt design competition and fashion show for children living at the Nelson Children's Center in Denton, Texas. As a part of the curriculum in the course, students learned about the importance of volunteering in the community and, as a result, planed and produced this event as a volunteering, teambuilding, and leadership opportunity for all members of the class. After advanced planning, on the day of the event, students traveled to Nelson Children's Center to assist children at the home with decorating t-shirts using a super hero theme that was chosen to inspire the children to find the power to soar towards their dreams. After a couple of hours, all of the children and students arrived at the fashion show venue within the home to find a lighted runway down which all the children modeled their creations to loud music and clapping. After the show, all attendees were treated to a reception during which there were lots of hugs and thanks among the children and the students. For a news brief that appeared in the Denton Record-Chronicle about the event, click here.
