- Faculty Senate
- Avenues for participation in the decision-making process of the Texas
Woman's University reflect a recognition that the University is a community of
educators and that collegiality is a valid form of governance. Translated into
practice, this form of governance relies on active and responsible participation
of faculty.
At the Texas Woman's University, one avenue for shared governance is the Faculty
Senate (hereinafter referred to as the Senate). The Constitution and Bylaws of
the Senate were approved by the Board of Regents in 1981 and reapproved in 2000
following a comprehensive review and revisions. The Senate, comprised of elected
faculty representatives, is a deliberative assembly charged with recommending
academic policies and voicing faculty concerns. Established within the Senate
are the following standing committees: Academic Freedom and Responsibility,
Academic Standards, Administrator Evaluations, Budget and Planning, Committee
Selection Committee, Constitution and Bylaws, and Elections. Actions of the
Senate germane to academic policies must follow the process defined by the
Senate Constitution and Bylaws (see Appendix III). Recommendations enacted by
the Senate are forwarded to the President of the University for consideration
and, when required, are submitted to the Board of Regents for final approval. It
is through this process that recommendations from the faculty for responsible
change are voiced and shared governance is enabled.
