Online Course Development Program Return to Top

Overview:

This program helps faculty members new to distance education to design their first TWU distance education course. Participants will complete the online course to get started in the design of their course. Participants will work in conjunction with the instructional designer assigned to their college to complete the overview elements for their course during the summer and work with the designer to upload content and activities into their course during the academic year.

Target Audience:

  • Full time faculty members who have not previously taught online for TWU and anticipate teaching a distance education course.
  • New TWU faculty

Participants:

  • Limited to 10 participants

Participant Requirements:

  • Complete 3 week online course.
  • Insert overview materials (participant expectations, course routines, contact mechanisms, etc.) into Blackboard shell.
  • Develop and upload content into Blackboard shell.

Program Components:

  • Online course begins on July 7, 2008 and ends on July 25, 2008.
  • Payment 1: $750 after successful completion of course and review of overview materials for course.
  • Faculty members, working in conjunction with their Instructional Designer, will design, develop, and upload course content (Time frame: Fall, 2008 & Spring 2009).
  • Payment 2: $750 after successful review of course content by Instructional Designer. (Time frame: review will begin after approximately 50% of the course is complete. Payment will initiate after the Instructional Designer approves the course and can occur at anytime during the academic year.

Distance Education Innovation Institute Return to Top

Overview:

The Distance Education Innovation Institute is designed to support distance educators to apply and research Web 2.0 technologies in distance education courses. The Institute will provide instruction and support in the use of Web 2.0 technologies, allow exploration of Web 2.0 technologies, and encourage increased communication and collaboration among distance educators. Participants submit a mini-proposal describing a planned research study on the impact of Web 2.0 technologies into one or more distance courses. Participants will spend 20 hours during the week of July 28 – August 1, 2008 on the TWU Denton campus working with the TWU Instructional Design team. Participants will have the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters to complete data collection on the study. There is a required mid-point review due no later than February 2, 2009.

Target Audience:

  • Full time tenured or tenure-track faculty members; must be scheduled to teach a distance course during fall 2008 and/or spring 2009.

Participants:

  • Limited to 10 participants

Participant Requirements:

  • Complete application form with agreement from Department Chair and Dean
  • Complete responses to the Request for Applications
  • Signed agreement to attend 20 hours on the Denton campus (July 28 – August 1, 2008).

Program Components:

  • Innovation Institute at TWU Denton campus for one week (July 28 – August 1, 2008); 20 contact hours
  • Successful proposals will design and test the impact of Web 2.0 technologies in one or more distance education courses during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Required mid-point review due February 2, 2009.
  • Phase one funding ($750) will be released after successful completion of the Institute. Phase two funding ($750) will be released after successful submission of the mid-point review with satisfactory progress toward project goals, objectives, and timeline.
  • Projects proposing a study on Web 2.0 technologies and gender will receive additional priority points during review.

Online Educator Symposium 2008 Return to Top

This one-day event is for all distance educators. Three concurrent tracks will be featured:

  • Dare to Share – Learn from current TWU distance educators. Presenters will select one element of their online course to share with other faculty.
  • Distance Initiatives – Updates on current and planned online initiatives at TWU.
  • Teaching and Learning – Information on techniques for the distance course.

Date: August 28, 2008

Times: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Faculty interested in presenting should contact Alli Peterson no later than June 16, 2008. Include your name, name of the presentation, and a one-paragraph description. You can expect to present your topic for about 20-25 minutes. Please allow some time for questions from the audience.


QualityMatters™ Pilot Project, Year 3 Return to Top

Overview:

Year three of the project will add 35 faculty members. Faculty will receive training on the QM Rubric and be eligible to become MOL certified reviewers. This phase of the project will run from September 2008 – August 2009. Faculty will redesign one course to meet all standards found in the QM rubric. Participants will also review another course, according to the QM review process.

Target Audience:

  • Faculty (full/part time, visiting) serving as instructors of record in distance education courses. Full time faculty currently teaching distance courses will be given preference over other appointments.

Participants:

  • Limited to 35 participants

Participant Requirements:

  • Complete Application with appropriate signatures.
  • Complete “Applying the QM Rubric” training.
  • Insert overview materials (participant expectations, course routines, contact mechanisms, etc.) into distance education course.
  • Align distance education course to QM standards. (Note: major modification to course content is not necessarily an outcome of the QM project. Most of the modification is done through clearly stated expectations and requirements.)
  • Minimum modification criteria (Year 3)
    • Existing course to be redesigned to address all review elements found in the rubric (40 total), essential for certification by MOL.
    • This will generate 80/80 points necessary for meeting the expectations of the QM review process.
  • Meet periodically with others in the project (face-to-face, online, and/or videoconference) and staff from Lifelong Learning.
  • Collaborate and support other project participants.
  • Review a minimum of one other course.
  • Provide data, as requested by Lifelong Learning.

Program Components:

  • Applying the QM Rubric to your Course will be delivered during Fall 2008 and Spring 2009.
  • Supplemental funding ($400) will be released after alignment of distance course to QM standards, per review by Instructional Designer.
