The Connection, March 2007

This semester is approaching its halfway point, so keep plugging away! Before it’s all over, take a look at this edition of The Connection for ways to stay informed about the latest activities and policies.

You are receiving this newsletter because you are enrolled in at least one course that has a televideo or internet component. These types of courses are called eLearning courses. If you feel that you have received this newsletter in error or if you have a topic you would like to see addressed, please notify the Distance Learning staff at DL@mail.twu.edu.  

Important Dates:

Mar. 19 – 23 Spring Break

Mar. 29 – 5 p.m. Final payment installment deadline; Last day to drop a class or withdraw from the University

Payment of tuition and fees

The final installment payment and any remaining balance for spring 2007 are due March 29th by 5pm. Account balances can be found and online payments can be made via the Pioneer Portal and PortalPay.  Balances due must be paid in full to avoid early registration delays for the summer and fall semesters. Early registration begins on April 2nd. 

Advising Codes

Be on the lookout for information regarding the use of advising codes for summer and fall 2007. A formal announcement will be posted in Pioneer Portal and Blackboard.

Career Seminars

Career Services will host several Career Seminars during March and April.  Topics that will be discussed include surviving your 1st 90 days on the job, effectively dealing with co-workers and supervisors, managing your finances, interviewing, dining etiquette and developing your professional business wardrobe.  For further details regarding the seminars, visit Career Workshops.

For each seminar that you attend, your name will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize worth up to $500.  The grand prize will be awarded at the April 26th Career Wardrobes that Win seminar.  You must be present to win! Call Career Services at 940-898-2950 to sign up to attend the seminars.  We hope to see you there!

Library Notes

The Blackwell Reference Online is a vast online library containing almost 300 reference volumes pertaining to the humanities and social sciences.  Search the full text reference volumes online at: Blackwell Reference.

Searching for full text of a Theses or Dissertation?

Dissertation Abstracts Online & Proquest Digital Dissertations is the database to search.  With more than 2 million entries, PQD&T is the single, central, authoritative resource for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses. ProQuest

Use Database Online Tutorials to enhance your search strategies for Research.  Help Pages, Navigation Guides, Study Guides and Tutorials are developed by database vendors to assist you with accessing, searching and retrieving materials for your research needs. The documents are in a variety of formats -- PDF, PowerPoint and Flash Media. Database Online Tutorials

S.T.E.P.

For those who are close to the Denton campus, technology trainings are available every Tuesday and Wednesday. The trainings are offered through the Student Technology Empowerment Program (STEP), which is sponsored by Instructional Support Services. The schedule and topics are on the STEP web site at https://portal.twu.edu/step. The presentations begin at 12:30 p.m. and are finished in plenty of time for class at 1. For those not able to come to campus, all materials are on the web site available for free download. Also, STEP trainers will provide one-on-one support over email for specific questions. Questions? Please check out the web site or send an email to STEP@twu.edu.

Saturday, March 10

TWU Gymnastics vs. Southeastern Missouri State, Bowling Green, and Kentucky @ Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall - 1600 Bell Avenue, 7:00 p.m., $5 adults, $3 non-TWU students, children ages 7-17 and senior citizens. It will be Senior Recognition and Parent Appreciation Night so come bid a final farewell to the TWU gymnastics seniors in their last home meet of their career, this meet will also feature live music from Denton’s very own Rivers West band.

Monday, March 12

TWU Athletics Maroon and White Luncheon @ Outback Steakhouse - 300 S. I-35 E, 11:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., $5 (includes Outback lunch), join TWU Head Gymnastics Coach Frank Kudlac as he reviews his squad’s 2007 regular season and looks forward to the post-season.
