TWU Dallas Center Building Campaign

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Two colleges within TWU offer degree programs in Dallas – the College of Health Sciences and the College of Nursing.  Both of these Colleges enjoy the same reputation as their counterparts in Houston and Denton.  Disciplines in both colleges within the Institute of Health Sciences - Dallas Center are nationally ranked and nationally known for their innovation and their contributions to the field of healthcare.  In addition, the Dallas Center houses TWU’s nationally recognized Stroke Center – a division of the College of Health Sciences, at the Parkland site. 

College of Nursing

  • TWU’s College of Nursing remains the Texas leader in preparing more nurses than any other program in Texas with over 13,000 alumni.
     

  • TWU’s College of Nursing educated 2,492 pre-nursing, baccalaureate, RN/BS, RN/MS, accelerated, master’s and Ph.D. students in 2007.  TWU’s College of Nursing had a total of 1,310 undergraduate nursing applicants in Dallas/Houston - 392 undergraduate nursing students were enrolled (average GPA of 3.7 in 2007-2008).
     

  • TWU nursing students consistently perform well above the state average on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX); 99% of our students pass within one year of graduation.
     

  • TWU baccalaureate and master’s nursing programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education through 2014.
     

  • TWU had the first Ph.D. nursing program in Texas (established in 1971 -the first of its kind in the southwest)
     

  • TWU has the largest nursing Ph.D. program in the U.S.  
     

  • TWU’s College of Nursing is the 5th largest nursing college in the U.S. according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. 
     

  • TWU’s College of Nursing alumni hold numerous executive level positions throughout the state.
     

  • TWU is beginning the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in summer 2008, which will increase capacity of primary care populations served by high level, system oriented advanced practice nurses.

College of Health Sciences

 

School of Occupational Therapy

  • TWU’s School of Occupational Therapy was founded in 1943 and has been the Nation’s leading provider of practitioners for many years.
     

  • TWU is the only occupational therapy program in Texas to offer advanced professional degrees.  The Ph.D. in occupational therapy is one of only three programs in the U.S. to offer the most rigorous degree in the discipline. 
     

  • TWU has offered the Master of Occupational Therapy degree for more than 30 years. 
     

  • TWU’s occupational therapy faculty are well-published in the most widely-used textbooks and recognized internationally for authoring the Theory of Occupational Adaptation.
     

  • Many TWU graduates are directors and key faculty members in occupational therapy programs across the nation; they oversee major rehabilitation centers and are private practitioners with national reputations for their expertise. 
     

  • TWU’s School of Occupational Therapy was recently re-accredited by ACOTE (Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education) and given the highest recognition by receiving a ten year accreditation – the maximum number of years possible – awarded only to programs of high standing and proven excellence.

 School of Physical Therapy
 

  • TWU offers the only Ph.D. program in physical therapy in Texas. Graduates become faculty members in physical therapy graduate programs throughout Texas and across the nation.
     

  • TWU’s graduate program in physical therapy is ranked 1st among public universities in Texas, according to U.S. News & World Report.
     

  • TWU’s physical therapy faculty hold leadership positions with the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (the state licensing agency), the American Physical Therapy Association, and the Texas Society of Allied Health Professionals.
     

  • TWU’s physical therapy faculty serve as site visitors for CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education) in the U.S.
     

  • Eighty percent of TWU’s physical therapy faculty hold doctoral degrees.
     

  • Internships are available in over 300 clinical sites nationwide.
     

  • TWU first offered a master’s program in physical therapy in 1972.  We are the first public university in Texas to be approved to offer the Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

 TWU’s Stroke Center

Research and Rehabilitation

  • The Stroke Center is located on the TWU Parkland campus.  It is a center for persons recovering from stroke which provides opportunities to participate in cutting edge research and train students in the most current treatment practices.
     

  • The mission of The Stroke Center is to: (1) establish evidence-based practice through clinical research trials; (2) train allied health students in state-of-the-art stroke practices; and (3) provide cost effective rehabilitation by using graduate students in training.
     

  • The Stroke Center has received international recognition for pioneering research in rehabilitation pharmacology. Research in pharmacotherapy carried out at the center has generated almost $2 million dollars in external funding and has been supported by The Texas Advanced Research Program, The National Institutes of Health, The Moody Foundation, The Mobility Center Foundation, and private gifts.
     

  • Over 1,600 students in the rehabilitation disciplines of speech language pathology, physical therapy and occupational therapy have matriculated through the center since its inception in 1992 and now practice in numerous areas around the state.
     

  • During the 2007 academic year, approximately 1,800 patient visits were recorded at The Stroke Center.
