GLISA Constitution
PREAMBLE
The students enrolled in the Graduate Program of the School of Library and Information studies do hereby establish the Student Chapter of the American Library Association, which shall further be known as GLISA/ALA, with GLISA being an acronym for the Graduate Library and Information Studies Association, serving as the local social arm of the chapter.
I. PURPOSE
GLISA/ALA shall promote the social, cultural, intellectual, and professional growth of its member and support the School of Library and Information Studies. It will also facilitate and encourage participation in the American Library Association.
II. MEMBERSHIP
- All members of this organization shall be currently enrolled at Texas Woman's University in the School of Library and Information Studies.

- Faculty of the School of Library and Information Studies, their spouses, and spouses of student members are hereby designated as honorary members and are entitled to all the privileges of membership with the exception that they cannot vote.
III. FINANCES
- Voting members will be required to join ALA at the student rate. Applications will be provided with dues paid directly to ALA at any time.
- Local dues are to be paid to the Treasurer.
IV. ACTIVITIES
- The Chapter shall hold a general membership meeting at the beginning of each year (Fall semester)
- Activities and programs will be planned in accordance with the purpose set forth in Article I.
V. OFFICERS
- The officers of this organization shall consist of a President, Vice-President of Publicity, Vice-President of Projects, Secretary, and Treasurer.
It shall be the responsibility of these officers to plan and administer the activities of this organization.
- Responsibilities
- The President shall preside at all of the meetings, direct the activities of the other officers, and oversee matters concerning membership, publications, and GLISA/ALA sponsored projects and activities.
- The President-Elect will serves as the Vice-President of Publicity , and shall be responsible for publicizing the meetings and activities of the association. S/he will also be in charge of the organization's newsletter and of its distribution to students and faculty. S/he must be able to commit to the organization for at least two years.
- The Vice-President of Projects shall work with the President in planning and overseeing the activities of the organization.
- The Secretary shall record the minutes of every GLISA/ALA meeting and work with the President in producing meeting agendas. S/he will also write notes of appreciation to speakers on behalf of the membership.
- The Treasurer shall collect dues. S/he will keep accurate records of membership and maintain accurate records of all financial matters transacted by GLISA/ALA.
VI. FACULTY ADVISORS
- The Faculty Advisors shall be recommended by the Dean of the School of Library and Information Studies and approved by the members of the Student Chapter. The Faculty Advisors shall act as liaison between the Student Chapter and the American Library Association and between the Student Chapter and the School of Library and Information Studies.
- The Faculty Advisors shall also coordinate the first meeting of each year, provide an orientation of membership to ALA and direct the election of officers.
- Faculty Advisors’ positions will be up for review/discussion every two years.
VII. EXECUTIVE BOARD
The Executive board shall consist of the Officers and the Faculty Advisors as Member Ex-Officio.
VIII. ELECTIONS AND TERMS OF OFFICE
- Nominations of officers shall be coordinated by the Faculty Advisors at the first organizational meeting of each year or by the outgoing President at the end of the year.
- Elections shall take place by a show of hands at the first organizational meeting of the year.
- Terms of office for all offices, except the President-Elect/VP-Publicity shall be for one year, with no restrictions on the number of incumbencies.
- The President will be not be chosen in an election with the understanding that she/he nominated for VP-Publicity will also be running as the President-elect.
- Vacancies on the Board will be filled under the direction of the Faculty Advisors with a vote of the Executive Board.
IX. COMMITTEES
Committees shall be appointed as necessary by the Executive Board.
X. PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE
All questions of parliamentary procedure shall be decided in accordance with the forms outlined in the most current edition of Roberts Rules of Order.
XI. AMENDMENTS
Proposed amendments to this Constitution may be introduced by any member at any meeting or by petition to the Chair. Ratification shall be determined by a majority of those present at the next meeting of the organization who have paid their membership dues.
