Reading Recovery is an early literacy intervention program designed for first grade children having difficulty learning to read and write. Children meet individually with a specially trained teacher for 30 minutes daily for an average of 12-20 weeks to catch up with their peers and continue to work within an average setting in their classrooms. Data collected on all children served to document a strong track record of preventing reading failure for many first graders. Reading Recovery is also available in Spanish through Deseubriendo La Lectura.

TWU is one of 23 Reading Recovery University Training Centers in the United States, and the only university in the world providing training for Descubriendo La Lectura. Teacher leaders, sponsored by their districts to train teachers to work with first graders in their schools.

Reading Recovery serves as a safety net for children having trouble with literacy learning in any good classroom program. It meets the challenge of 'closing the gap' and 'no child left behind.' It can also serve as a pre-referral program for a small number of children who may need specialized longer-term help.

TWU is also one of two universities in the United States with the credentials to train university trainers for other universities.
