The Department of Reading offers a doctoral degree in reading education through the Federation of North Texas Universities. We offer both the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Education (Ed.D.).

Admission Process
Admission to the Federation doctoral program in reading is a two-step process. Each applicant first must apply to and meet the general admission requirements of the graduate school at one of the participating universities. The student should apply to the school that best meets his or her research and career objectives. Applications for Federation doctoral students who meet initial graduate school admission standards are forwarded to the Reading Education Federation Admissions Committee for review. The committee consists of one member from each institution.

Admission Standards
The doctoral applicant must meet the following program admission standards:
  • A minimum grade point average of  3.5 on the master's degree
  • Completed GRE with preferred score of 500 on verbal section and also score of 500 on either quantitative or analytic section OR scores within one standard deviation of the posted mean
  • Completion of three years of successful teaching experience. If the student does not have the full three years of experience, the Federation Admissions Committee may recommend that the student participate in extensive practice or internship work as part of the doctoral degree requirements.
  • Initial acceptance into the Federation doctoral reading program also is based in the applicant
    • Participating in an interview
    • Submit professional writing sample
    • Providing a goals statement for doctoral studies
    • Completing an on-site writing sample
  • Successful completion of common admission examinations developed by the Admissions Committee

In addition, the Department of Reading requires certification of proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English for unconditional admission to all doctoral degree programs. This proficiency must be certified to the advisor within the period of the first 12 semester hours, or its equivalent, of course work taken at Texas Woman's University toward the degree.

Doctoral Requirements for the Ph.D. and Ed.D.
The Ph.D. and Ed.D. are offered through the Federation of North Texas Area Universities. All doctoral students must take a minimum of 12 hours at Federation institutions other than TWU.  Students have 10 years to complete the doctoral program. No coursework beyond the master's degree which is over 10 years old at the time the doctoral degree is conferred can be used toward the doctoral degree.

Both the Ph.D. and Ed.D. include a residency requirement. Students will satisfy the residency requirement by completing two consecutive semesters with a minimum of nine hours taken each semester. Consecutive semesters may include (fall/spring), (spring/summer), or (summer/fall). Employment is not restricted during these two semesters.
