Admission into Student Teaching Program

Undergraduate certification applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

Applicant for an Interdisciplinary Major Degree

  1. Admission to the Teacher Education Program
  2. Cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 overall grade point average
  3. Completion (grade of C or higher) of all courses in the Interdisciplinary major and the Education minor
  4. Mastery of content area evidenced by a TExES/ExCET Generalist Qualifying Exam score of 75 or above

Applicant for a Secondary, All-level, or Grades 4-8 Specialization Degree

  1. Admission to the Teacher Education Program
  2. Cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 overall
  3. Completion (grade of C or higher) of all courses in the Education minor
  4. Completion (as defined by the major department) of all courses in the major
  5. Mastery of teaching practice-based content evidenced by completion of recommending program's TExES/ExCET eligibility criteria and a score of 75 or above on the corresponding Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility Qualifying Exam

Applicant for a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
Degreed students seeking teacher certification through the Post-Baccalaureate Program must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Admission to the Teacher Education Program
  2. Academic requirements vary depending on initial coursework and area of certification; however, post-baccalaureate students must complete all courses leading to certification, including 12 hours of education courses with a grade of “C” or higher
  3. Cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 overall
  4. Elementary level teachers must receive a score of 75 or above on their content area TExES/ExCET Qualifying Exam
  5. Secondary and All-level teachers must provide documentation of TExES/ExCET eligibility from their content area department representative (Check with your major department for specific requirements.)
  6. All students must receive and a score of 75 or above on the corresponding Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility Qualifying Exam

Applicant for a MAT Degree
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is an interdisciplinary master's degree designed to prepare graduate students for initial teacher certification. MAT students interested in student teaching must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Degree plan signed by advisor submitted to Professional Development Center (The plan must be officially approved by the Graduate School prior to student teaching.)
  2. “Change of Degree Plan” form approved by the Graduate School for any changes on the degree plan
  3. 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA on master’s coursework at TWU
  4. Completion of EDUC 5113, 5123, 5131, 5133, and 5142 with a grade of B or higher
  5. Completion of all additional coursework on the degree plan, except student teaching, with a grade of B or higher (In rare instances, exceptions may be approved by the advisor and department chair.)
  6. Completion of the TWU Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility (PPR) Qualifying Exam with a score of 75 or above
  7. Passing score on the content area specialization TExES or a score of 75 or above on the TWU Qualifying Exam for the content area specialization

A qualifying score of 75 or above on the Special Education qualifying exam is not required for student teaching, however, it remains a requirement to receive approval to take the TExES/ExCET exam.
