Scholarly Writing Sample Instructions
for Graduate Admissions to Family Studies

All applicants for graduate degrees in Family Studies are expected to hold an earned bachelor's degree or equivalent and have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate and a minimum 3.0 GPA for all prior graduate work.

Admissions to graduate programs in Family Studies require a successful rating on a writing sample on one of the following topics:

•  Describe three issues facing families in the global village.

•  Compare and contrast family life or a specific family issue in the U.S. and one of the following nations: Brazil, China, or India .

•  Apply the concept of resilience to parenting.

•  Discuss the concepts of family resilience and family crisis.

•  Discuss adaptability in terms of family composition in contemporary America .

•  Impact of individuals' longevity on families

Scholarly writing samples of approximately 700-1000 words, using recent references (since year 2000) should follow APA (5th Edition) guidelines for citations and format. For a list of acceptable journals see http://www.famsci.com/Journals.htm
