The beliefs and goals of the LL-CNE Provider Unit are relevant and appropriate to prospective learners. The LL-CNE Provider Unit believes the individual registered nurse determines his or her practice according to the Theory of Nursing Practice, which indicated: The depth and breath of practice (P) is determined by the individual nurse’s (I) integration and synthesis through cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and spiritual domains of self, times nursing knowledge (NK) (Van Sell & Kalofissudis, 2001). In addition, the theory syntheses statement designated: The degree of change in practice which an individual nurse emits is directly related to the degree of integration and synthesis of nursing knowledge, which includes: nursing foundation (science and humanities) plus nursing essence plus methodology plus disciplined inquiry (Van Sell & Kalofissudis, 2001). Therefore, the individual nurse may lack nursing knowledge resulting in a practice deficit. The LL-CNE provides the individual registered nurse learner seeking professional advancement, licensure renewals, or specialized nursing training with TNA and ANCC COA approved evidence-based continuing nursing education activities that conform to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation requirements.

The LL-CNE Provider Unit adapted the definition of Continuing Nursing Education as defined in Rule 216.1 of the Board of Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas (1999) as:

Programs beyond the basic preparations which are designed to promote and enrich knowledge, improve skills and develop attitudes for the enhancement of nursing practice, thus improving health care to the public Nurse refresher courses are not accepted for continuing education credit.

In addition, the LL-CNE Provider Unit agreed with the Board of Nursing in the state of Texas that identified the following activities as not acceptable for continuing education credits:  basic CPR, in-service programs that provide specific information about the work setting’s philosophy, procedures; on-the-job training and equipment demonstration; refresher courses designed to update knowledge; orientation programs designed to introduce employees to a specific work setting; courses that focus upon self-improvement, changes in attitude, self-therapy, self-awareness; weight loss, yoga, or personal appearance; economic courses for financial gain, e.g. investments, retirement, preparing resumes and techniques for job interviews; liberal art courses in music, art, philosophy, etc. when unrelated to patient/client care; or courses for lay people.

The LL-CNE Provider Unit adapted from the American Nurses Association,  Standards of Professional Performance (2004) related to education (Standard 8: Education), which stated:

The nurse attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.  Measurement criteria include participating in educational activities related to appropriate knowledge bases and professional issues; demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry to identify personal learning needs; seeking experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competency in clinical practice or role performance; acquiring knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area: practice setting, role; or situation; maintaining professional records that provide evidence of competency and lifelong learning; and seeking experiences and formal and independent learning activities to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge (ANA, 2004, p.35).

The LL-CNE Provider Unit believes it can meet the individual nurse learner’s requirements for lifelong learning.  In addition, the LL-CNE Provider Unit is committed to providing the highest quality of evidence-based continuing nursing education activities to address the learning needs of individual registered nurses.
