Course Description
The Evidence-based Best Practice Publishing Made Possible course is designed to familiarize the new and/or creative author with the realistic, practical steps required in the total design and development of a manuscript from idea to reality. Practical answers and solutions will be provided in order for the creative author to tackle the publishing process with confidence and optimism. The knowledge and tools provided as an outcome of this course will enable the participant to begin writing an article, or design a book proposal or journal proposal, for submission to an interested publisher.

Course Objective
Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to create an evidence-based best practice manuscript for submission to a peer reviewed journal.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain how to transfer systematic thinking patterns into systematic writing patterns by paying attention to detail.
  • Identify the attributes of professional scientific writing.
  • Conduct an evidence-based systematic review for best practices on the topic for manuscript development.
  • Formulate criteria for choosing a peer reviewed journal or book publisher, responding to reviews, revising a manuscript, approving editorial changes, dealing with rejection, and submitting to a different journal or publisher.
  • Write an inquiry letter regarding manuscript submission to a journal editor or book publisher.
  • Write a cover letter for manuscript submission.
  • Produce a manuscript for submission to a peer reviewed professional journal or for a book proposal.
  • Critique a manuscript for publication.
  • Revise a manuscript for submission to a peer reviewed professional journal.

Course Instructors

Dr. Sharon L. Van Sell, Professor, Texas Woman’s University, Dallas, Texas; Director of Evidence-Based Practice for RN; Editorial Board Member for RN; Family and Community Health Journal; and ICU and Theory Web Journal
Dr. Van Sell’s research focus remains on the discovery and dissemination of nursing knowledge. She serves on the editorial boards of three refereed nursing journals: RN, Family and Community Health Journal, and Health Science Journal (Greece).  She has published over 25 articles in refereed journals as well as 8 nursing books. She is the Primary Nurse Planner for the LL-CNE office at Texas Woman’s University.

Rev. Carmen Warner-Robbins grew up in Minnesota, and always knew she wanted to help people, inspire potential, and encourage hope. Following her RN, BSN, PHN and MSN degrees, in 1974 Carmen developed the nations first emergency care text Emergency Care Assessment and Intervention and initiated national programs in domestic violence, sexual assault, and the first certification course for Emergency Department nurses. Twenty-five years later, Carmen continues in her role as a journal editor, author, nurse consultant, Pastor, encourager and social entrepreneur, seeking positive change, growth and hope in the lives of incarcerated women. In the fall of 1982, Carmen was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.

Eula M. Oliphant, BS, MSL, Librarian, Texas Woman’s University, Dallas, Texas
Eula received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Prairie View A&M University and her Master of Library and Information Sciences from Texas Woman’s University. She began her career as a Health Sciences Librarian with Texas Woman’s University in August, 2000 after working for the Dallas Public Library for 32 years. Eula’s responsibilities include managing both Dallas campus libraries. She is the library liaison for the nursing program faculty including the selection of new materials for the library collection and providing professional reference service to faculty, students and staff. Eula conducts bibliographic instruction sessions to students and faculty.  She has presented at workshops and has attended Evidence Based conferences. Eula is a member of the Medical Library Association, the South Central Chapter of MLA, and HealthLINE Librarians which is a local chapter of Northeast Texas Health Sciences Librarians.

General Information

Participants are encouraged to send a draft of a working document for development during the course. Instructors will continuously review material created throughout the week. This will foster the completion on an article ready for submission by the end of the week.

Continuing Nursing Education Credits
Texas Woman’s University will award 32.5 contact hours or 3.25 CNE credits to participants who completes the course.

Texas Woman’s University Lifelong Learning Continuing Nursing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

No conflict of interest has been disclosed.

Location / Hotel
The course will be held at the Texas Woman’s University Parkland Campus, 1810 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas 75235. The course will begin Monday, July 27 at 8:30 a.m. and end Friday, July 31 at 5 p.m.

A block of rooms is available at the Residence Inn by Marriott, Dallas Market Center, 6950 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, Texas 75247, (214.631.2472). Reservations for the special group rate of $109 for a one bedroom suite can be made by calling 800.331.3131 and asking for the Texas Woman’s University group block. The block will be held until July 13, 2009, after which current rates will apply.

Registration Fee
The early bird registration fee is $995. After July 16, 2009 the fee increases to $1,195. Refreshment breaks will be provided. Lunches will be ordered in each day. Please plan approximately $8/day for lunch. Register Online.

Refund/Cancellation Policy
Registrants who find it necessary to cancel will receive a refund, less a $125 processing fee. To receive a refund, you must submit written notification seven days prior to the event. Refunds will not be issued once the course begins. Substitutions may be made at any time. The Office of Lifelong Learning reserves the right to cancel this event if sufficient enrollment is not met. In doing so, Texas Woman’s University’s liability is limited to the registration fee.
