About the Conference Series


The Advance Practice Nurse (APN) with prescriptive authority will receive the current information regarding selected topics on differential diagnosis for prescribing drugs, physiological impact including contraindications, complications, and pharmacological dosage interventions for their patients.

Nurses practicing in clinical areas will receive the current information regarding selected topics on the administration and application of physiological interventions including contraindications, complications, and pharmacological dosage interventions for their patients.

Objectives for the Advance Practice Nurse will focus on prescriptive authority.

Objectives for the RN will focus on the administration and application of pharmacological treatment for patient care.

The nurse practitioner or practicing nurse will be able to do the following at the end of this CE conference:
•    Describe the various mechanisms involved in causing drug interactions.
•    Identify important drug interactions that can influence patient care.
•    State the various treatment options in pain management and how to safely implement opioid rotation.
•    Describe the approach to treating high cholesterol in HIV patients without compromising viral control or safety.
•    Identify the various drug regimens recommended in the management of irritable bowel syndrome.

About the Presenter
Anthony J. Busti, PharmD, BSN, BCPS, FNLA, FAHA
Dr. Busti is currently the Editor-In-Chief for Pharmacology Weekly, Inc – a medical education company that provides publications and online databases that are designed to make pharmacology understandable as well as clinically relevant. Dr. Busti is also an adjunct professor at Texas Woman’s University and Baylor University where he teaches advanced pharmacology and pharmacotherapeutics. Dr. Busti earned his Bachelors Degree in the Science of Nursing (BSN) from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy. He then completed his post-doctoral clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and Scott & White Memorial Hospital. He most recently served as Associate Professor at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy’s Dallas/ Ft. Worth Regional Campus where he also a clinical appointment as a clinical pharmacist in internal medicine and infectious diseases and clinical pharmacologist in the Clinical Research Unit at the Dallas VA Medical Center. His research program focused on HIV and non-HIV related metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular pharmacotherapy.
   
Dr. Busti is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, Fellow of the National Lipid Association, Diplomate of the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology and a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS). In addition he is currently a member of the Board of Governors for the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology, a Board Member for the National Lipid Association and Southwest Lipid Association, and serves on the ACLS Continuing Education Planning Committee for the American Heart Association. He is a contributing author to the 2004 and 2006 AHA American Hearth Association’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Guidelines Handbooks and also serves as a pharmacology reviewer for the ACLS guidelines and supporting materials.  In 2003, 2005, and 2007 he was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the State of Texas Pharmaceutical & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. In May 2005 Dr. Busti was appointed by Executive Commissioner Albert Hawkins to be Chairman to the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Board for the State of Texas.

General Information

Continuing Nursing Education Credits
Each conference day offers 5 contact hours. The APN presentation meets the Texas State Board requirements for 5 contact hours of CE in Pharmacology. Texas Woman’s University Lifelong Learning Continuing Nursing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Conference Locations
The conferences will be held at Texas Woman’s University’s Dallas Presbyterian and Houston Centers. The TWU Presbyterian Center is located at 8194 Walnut Hill Lane, Dallas, Texas 75231 and the Houston Center is located at 6700 Fannin, Houston, Texas 77030.

Registration Fees
Early Bird registration fee $99 (until 2 weeks prior to the event start date)
Regular registration fee $119 (after 2 weeks prior to the event start date)
On-site registration fee $139

Cancellation/Refund Policy
Registrants who find it necessary to cancel will receive a refund, less a $20 processing fee. To receive a refund, you must submit written notification seven days prior to the event start date (fax 940.898.3416). Substitutions may be made at any time. Refunds will not be issued once the event begins. The Office of Lifelong Learning reserves the right to cancel this event if minimum enrollment is not met or other events out of our control take place. In doing so, Texas Woman’s University’s liability is limited to the registration fee.
